The reason to estimate 100,000 illegal abortions comes from estimates as to the number of deaths due to abortions. The reason they cannot use the actual number of illegal abortions, is because those statistics do not exist. It should be noted that the estimates of 1 million illegal abortions also rely on this method.

So how do they know the number of abortion deaths? How can we tell that these are reasonably accurate?

Back then, when a woman suffered abortion complications, she would not go to the abortion doctor for her symptoms. Instead, she would go to her family doctor, who would record the cause of death as an abortion. Unlike today, where these numbers are covered up, these records were readily available.

The problem with Tietze's estimates of 1 million abortions, is that he assumes that illegal abortions are much safer than any of the other sources. In fact, to get the 1 million figure, abortions have to be approximately as dangerous as an appendix removal.
