I like Pangea the best. With the others you might wind up like Robinsion caruso and have to restart. With the others sometimes you get a big island and sometimes you get alittle one. With Pangea you get a very big one and can begin attacking in the Acient age. Besides you get to use rails, and any continent wonder to its fullest. It usually is not a complete pangea I had a whole civ on an austrailia looking and sized island. However I usaully have to go a long ways to get my iron like next to another Civ to get it

I personally like achipelagoes, since they're more difficult, and because they offer better defense (I can get pretty paranoid ) Of course, it's always nice to do a continents game. Just recently, as the Babylonians (5 AI's -one dead now- small, warm, temp, raging) I basically got a continent to myself and the Persians (they're dead now ) and it is huge!!! I got a peaceful period of intense expansion, while the other 4 civs tried to kill each other. Now, however, they're trying to move in to my continent...

Random for me too...
Sometimes it's really crazy though. Last game as Celts (Standard,Monarch) I started on a Australian-size, all-tundra island by myself(the rest of the world was two huge continents). It was a struggle get into second place by retirement time. Missed the spaceship launch by 5 turns!!!! Lots of things I should've done differenently, but why repeat a game and all that. This game OTOH, Aztecs (Standard, Monarch), I start on a huge continent (continents map again). Until ~200BC it was Jaguar Warrior insanity, but very easy going warmongering-type action. Now, it's build, secure resources. It's ~1000AD and my score is >double the nearest competitor.
Ok, so both my examples were continents maps, but I think the first game would have been easier if the rest of the world were on islands and if I knew that from the beginning. It's the not knowing that gets ya.

Continents. On archipelago, there's no danger of being attacked and on a pangea it's too easy to use diplomacy to win. But random's nice for the start.

I always used to be a Continent's person, but I've had a lot of warmongering fun on Pangea. My main problem with Continents is that they are all completly filled out by the time you discover the other ones. I also dont like the difficulty it makes for waging war accross continents - it's basically not remotly feasable until late modern era.

Archipelago - Always!
Personally I love building navies and staging invasions - the AI is TERRIBLE at controlling naval forces compared to a human (or even to Civ2, which I found a lot harder).
Haven't got PTW yet, as I don't have broadband and use the net a lot for education - but one day, I'll be out there, looking for my next Trafalgar...

It's almost always continents, unless I decide to start a huge game... then archipelago.

I always play on continents. Once I've taken my entire landmass, I'm still left with potential trading partners abroad. And I seem to enjoy being the diplomat in the late game (perhaps because late game wars are so ridiculously easy).

Pangaea all ways. Continents sometimes, but I might be stuck in a bloodbath with no place to expand. Archpelago will often suck because of no resources, small landmass etc. Often I can get a huge military up in the early game and destroy a few neighbors early. Pangaea hands down.

how do you deal with corruption on archipelagos? islands must be far away from each other so very few cities are productive the rest just useless

Archipelago, always. With continents or pangea you have to do endless wars, and war in Civ3 is quickly boring IMO.

Thank you, finally someone agrees with me. I can quite easily bonk some heads in my continents games, except when there's more than three fronts in my war (which actually happened recently).
Archipelago provides a nice challenge, and it also allows you to build up peacefully before you run into the moronic AI (possibly a bad side, I know). The AI really can't seem to handle Archipelagoes occasionally, does anyone elso notice this?

I select RANDOM for everything! The nations, the climates and everything else. I am talking every last option I select is set to random. It makes for an extremely different and interesting game everytime. You won't know for a while if you are on an islands map or continents or whatever. Usually I play on standard or large maps but sometimes I will play all the other sizes too. Also I play on either Regent or Monarch levels.
