Considering all of the house rules we are using, I would agree that we shouldnt be overly optimistic about what cities we can hold. We should limit ourselves to Leningrad, Kharkov, Moscow, Tula, Seramofvich, Verezonah, Stalingrad, Rostov, and Sevestpol. Depending on how lucky we are on the first turns, It might be wise to try to hold Perekop also.

I've played the scenario with our rules and it is going to be very difficult to hold vitebsk and smolensk,
is Kharkov so defensable?
I'm not planning on holding the city, if anybody has a good strategy to hold it...

Sorry, I meant Kallinin. Not Kharkov, was quoting from memory. I have always played with MGE, and I have never tried to defend Kharkov, but I doubt that it possible to hold on to it for very long, at least with out jepordizing the defence of more important cities.

In my game I managed to hold Smolensk relatively easily.
I think AI is not programed to take it specificaly, so it will rush to Moscow which then allows for some nice counterattacks from Smolensk the whole time.
Also a suggestion for you people about defending - do the 'scorched earth' policy. Leave as little units in cities you leave behind as to make sure Germans take them at size 1, or if they are not obective, completely destroy them. You have to destroy anti-tank defenses for this. Also pillage industrial squares around them.
The reason for this is that cities west of Don will be in German hands for most of the war and you don't want to give them the production.
The charge towards Berlin when time arrives is best via Smolensk in a straight line. Very doable when you get proper troops.
I took Berlin and penetrated deeply into Germany while Germans were still quite deep in my territory, still held Sevastopol for example.
Just some random thoughts of mine. I enjoyed this scenario very much and will follow your progress with interest.
