It certainly is different. I find it becomes more tactical and less strategic than a 'live' game - simply because you spend more time deliberating moves and checking on your efficiencies.

It may be a lot slower, but it is no less interesting. The slow-down lets you savour/agonise over the moments for longer.

For sure BC......each to their own. Personally I prefer 'live' MP to PBEM games that will take a year to finish, but PBEM is more suitable for some players.

We weren't objecting to PBEM, just the use of PBEM participation as a yardstick for useful posts.

Edit: In days gone by there were people that made at least King by posting 'turn passed' 1000 times in SMAC PBEM games......so maybe in fact the opposite is true - if you play PBEM you are a dirty spammer.

The true posters are those who post EVERYEHWER... pretty much all the Emperors (excepting PBEMERs like TheBirdMan) have pretty much posted everywhere and contribuited everywhere on Apolyton

I would bet that MANY respectable emperors here at apolyton have never done A-C... although I myself have made scenarios/modded Civ II, so I suppose I can qualify for C... but still- I don't see how those are necessary for contribuitions to apolyton every person does their own thing- humor,lists,debates in the OT, etc.

I find PCs a useful incentive to keep people playing in a PBEM game, even though they are being buggered 8 ways to Sunday in it.

I guess that this is only the rule if posting only to say that? I have seen lots of milestone comments in posts from quite a few posters, including myself, and noone has been PCRed for that. Of course, I at least only post if I feel I have something to say, so that might be the reason? If not, poor me when I reach King...

Darkcloud you always seem to abuse the wink when i see your posts is that lazy eye or something?

I think at first post count is part of the temptation of PBEM but after a while you only post turns when you can be bothered, then again i see people post every turn maybe im just lazy.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, how can you not expect people to spam when you have a title system and a custom avatar after a certain post limit? It's the biggest incentive to spam so if the admins and mods would really want to solve the spam problem, perhaps they should think a little if the Apolyton rank and avatar system are indeed the optimal ones.

The title system is one that most posters would want........sure it can create an incentive for spam, but if the system is inherently desirable it is a poor remedy to that problem to just drop the system. Far better is to regulate........with moderators.........hmm that sounds familiar.

Well, I hate to make myself a target once the mods finally close this thread and hand out PCRs to the people who posted here, but I must say this: King sucks. However, I love Emporer. I wouldn't mind getting stuck there, most people who know me personally already say I remind them of Napoleon anyways, without the Italian or the French or the Empire.

(please don't hurt me when you give us our PCRs Mr. Ming)

Then you should ask Ming or other mod to keep your Prince status, that way you're never gona get this disgusting King title ... Personally I also would like to have some other... but clearly not a prince title.. that would be just too.. hmmm.. well, you know what they say about Princes

With the fact that Ming has posted here 7 times and not closed it yet I'd be surprised if it isn't just closed when it hits 500 if it continues to stay semi on topic.

Moving on to the King rank sucking... I much prefer it over Prince for just the fact that I am most certainly not a Princly fellow IRL, IMHO.

IMHO the only good thing about Prince is the fact that you get your custom avatar within it . Went from SMAC Pirates to a Borg cube to my current one which actually represented me a long time ago in a chat room far far away.

But really, why does King suck? Sure it's lower than Emporer, but other than that, why? It's not like you get to do anything extra special as an Emporer that you couldn't do as a King, I suppose I just don't understand.

The Admins (probably) don't really care that much about spam, for the same reason they don't mind having lots of disabled DLs. It makes the site statistics look better.
