It is known to us... it is called a Kraken, and it is some form of evil-demon-shaped-as-a-giant-squid-that-is-a-bane-to-sealife.
We actually fight those pretty efectively by using 4 to 5 heathen captives as a distraction to this monster while we surround it with some 2 or 3 divisions of archers and spearmen, and finalizing it by throwing a large ammount of burning logs over it, while using some more 5-6 heathens to distract him. This usually is enough to send ´em back home, causing as few casualitites as 100 men (without counting the heathens).

We should consider taming some. Ride the fight out of them like with horses and then saddle them up and use them to augment our might navies!
