	Paying for college... Inflate your Upload Space

Temple University is giving me a 4500 dollar scholarship yearly straight up based on merit, which is about half the yearly tuition. My problem is paying for the other half...

the problem is I can't get need-based aide... not because I'm too rich (ha) but because I can't fill the gov't FAFSA forms because I do not have access to my parent's tax forms. Without them, I can't get need-based aid which i will need.

And no, me turning 18 and being completely economically independent of my parents will mean nothing... you are not considered emancipated by the FAFSA people until you are 26!

what should i do?

well get a job to help with the costs. failing that, try again to get access to your parents tax forms. maybe there are some schemes which are not means-tested that might be able to provide you with support.

Now, why don't you have access to your parents' tax forms again? I am sure they would be glad to fill out that "Parent" section for you if you tell them you can get a scholarship for that. That's what I did - told my father he can save up to $10K a semester if he fills in his share of the FAFSA and I get a scholarship.

My fiancee was/is in that situation...the only solution she's found is a private loan from Citibank. They do have decent rates for student loans, at least.

Ignore the silly comments Albert... congrats on Temple, a fine school. Don't let your friends convince you that college is selling out.

First... like suggested, ask nicely.
Second... then threaten to make the above mentioned phone call to the IRS...
Third... Contact the IRS directly. Since you are probably listed as a dependent, you have the RIGHT to view the tax returns.
Fourth... the suggestion to talk to a counseler at Temple is also a good idea.

Last but not least... KEEP TRYING NO MATTER WHAT. This is an important time in your life. Decisions you make now will have a great impact on how you spend the larger percentage of your life. Work hard... and do what is needed to succeed. Nobody else will do it for you... You have to walk the long road yourself.

I can't speak for Speer, but parents are not always cooperative.

Which also causes problems trying to see the tax forms on your own...you still need the parents to sign on the dotted line.

Paying For University/College is a Interesting subject, that many of us Cross at some point.

My situation isnt quite as bad as yours, I need to find 1,100 a Year for Tuiting and about 5000 for Living expenses. I also had a problem with Parent co-operation and hence did not go down that route. In England however you are still entitled to 75% Student loan without your parents filling out anything.

I found my funding in my Part-time Job, Which in combination manages to pay for both my Living expenses and tuition with some spare. My Student loan (which comes to nearly 3k) is extra money. I also have 3 credit cards and a £1000 overdraft available to me, and in total have over £3000 available to me In Credit if I really need the Money.

Funding rarely has magic solutions, but a combination of Part-time work (not too much of course, but say, 12-15 hours a work a week cant harm you too much), scholarships,govt support and bank credit is usually sees most people through.

Exactly.

When you need the tax forms it's not something you have to rely on your parents' good graces for.

If you aren't listed as a dependant, then if things work the same there as here then you can get funding based on your income counting as the whole of your family income. Since I'm assuming you earn minimal amounts of money, this will put you in the highest need category.

Also, if you are listed as a dependent and your parents' income is too high to qualify you for need-based assistance but they still refuse to materially contribute to your upkeep/tuition you can get some sort of documentation proving this and again, qualify based on your income alone.

College, thats for suckers, I make a great living and I never went. Its easy, just jump in front of a speeding car, and then sue the driver. If you get a lot of calcium in your diet you can do it 2 or 3 times a year!

Join the Navy, make them pay for it.

If your that smart, to get into Temple, you can enlist and apply straight for an officer program. It takes about a year, but it can be a good experience. I've lived overseas, been to about 20 different countries, and fought in a war for freedom.

And, I'll have money in college without working beyond studying, and no debt when I'm done

Don't join the military if your are not completely sure that you want to be in the military. I'm finishing up 4 years of government paid school and now I have to serve for 5 years in a service I don't know much about. Just watch out.

There are literally hundreds of organizations that will help you with tuition. Thousands of scholarships exist out there that few are aware of. Contact your financial aid office about organizations that have them. Search the internet. See if you parents employers offer scholarships.

Finally, look into student loans. These are usually guaranteed by the gov't and are not to hard to qualify for.

I put myself through college by working an 11PM-7AM shift at a hotel, slept the morning, afternoon classes, and the evening at the library. If I had known then what is available, it would have been a different picture.

Good Luck. College is definately worth it. Do what it takes to get your education.

I suppose that could be true. If you didn't know what you are getting into, than you shouldn't do it.

That is actually a big problem today.
