Try German, maybe, or Spanish, French is too complex.

Russian is very different, and it's nearly impossible to speak and write without mistakes if it's not your mother tongue, some very nasty stuff there.

http://www.apolyton.net has been a great help for me . Oh, you mean learning some other language than English? I guess you could, after gaining some base knowledge, go to some "foreign-language" online forum and just bravely start posting. People won't care if you don't really know the language too well, as long as you show effort and an ability to learn. Our Lord Who Lives At Tampere knows that a little ambiguity and weirdness was good enough for him .

Spanish is regularly common and without many exceptions, so it should be relatively easy. pronoiunciation is simpler than that of German.

Once you learn Spanish, more langauges come within reach, such as French, Italian, Portuguese.

Actually, I've lately been wondering whether it's true that some languages are "harder" to learn than others. It is very hard, though, to attain native-like skills in any foreign language.

That totally depends on what your original language is. German is quite easy for an English speaker and hellishly hard for a Chinese speaker (unless he speaks English too.)

And Andy-Man: why limit yourself to Europe? Try Chinese , or Japanese, or Arabic. I suspect that these might end up more useful.

While I'm unilingually English, I've sung in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, Latin & Ukrainian.

If I was inspired to learn a secong lanuage, I'd probably go with Spanish...

and rather than finding an Internet site, I'd recommend hanging out with people who speak the language.

I can't say that this is completely untrue, but wouldn't it imply that Apolyton posters from, say, Israel or Finland would, on average, have much worse English skills than, for example, Swedes and Dutchmen (which does not seem to be the case to me)?

My native language is English, but I am semi-fluent in Spanish and Latin. I prefer Latin, though, because it is totally useless (unless I decide to travel back in time to the Roman Empire). If I were to try to learn another language, I would probably try to learn Russian, just for the challenge of it.

I've taken Spanish, Latin, Russian, and Hebrew. I seriously recommend German.

Spanish is prolly the most useful, however, German would prolly be the best to go with if you are not in a constant school setting.

the list i gave was of languages i intend to learn, ie, i want to know all

Russian shouldn't be to hard seeing as alot of the letters are quite similar to greek (trying to learn classical greek to )

I did spanish and french at school, but at the time wasn't really interested, but i do have a small basic in both, so neither should be to hard (and reading spanish isn't very hard).

Does anyone know any message boards for any of those languages then? that seems like quite a good idea.

Damn easy tenses in Russian, but try with the spelling. Difficult to remember when a hyphen is needed, something like iz za, izza or iz-za. Also, I know that some words confuse the heck out of everybody, native speakers included.

The word bezidejnij, is it proper to spell áåçèäåéíûé or áåçûäåéíûé , eh ?
