	Fooling their spies Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

By looking at the public chatrooms and forums of CDG and GCA, we have managed to pick up a bit of intelligence info. There is no reason the otehr teams might be trying to do the same. What do you think of the idea of planting brief information in public places for them to find? It could be either true or false; its goal would not be to mislead them but to change their attitude and make them trust or distrust us more. Perhaps we could hint that we have found another civ to the north or east, but because we are leaving informal information in public information they could not accuse us of lying. At least for a time it could make them fear us more and be less aggressive. Or maybe that was a bad example. But what do you all think of the idea?

I think the idea is good; just be very wise and descreet about it. Also, remember, they can fool us too, so don't trust all public sources

That's a little to obvious, IMO, but the idea of providing misinformation is a good one Hot_Enamel. The type of information that should be put out shuld be left to misinterpretation rather than just blatently claiming or saying something. It should appear as a slip of the tongue.

I don't think the example was a particularly good idea. It'll just result in them wanting to scout north of us more than they do now.

However, making them think we have 4 or 5 NM's might be nice to delay any possible invasion plans they may or may not have.

I don't agree. If we foster a desire in them for northern exploration, perhaps they'll let our warrior proceed south in a mutual exploration pact. We could then possibly make contact with the fabled CFC, while they wander about empty jungle.

We already had this idea a couple 'o turns ago. A similar example was reviewed - however, we couldn't think of a way of misleading them in a proper way (that is - without pushing them to scout northwards).

It is still a good idea though. You can also do this in the 'Poly chatroom, if you suspect there are spies lurking.

Well wether or not we want to try to encourage/discourage their northern scouting (its mostly irrelevant since they will likely want to scout there eventually either way).

Misleading them into thinking our defenses are stronger than they are for real right now can't possibly be a bad thing, so long as they don't realize we are trying to mislead them.

I also think it's not entirely necessary that we lie to them. If they think we might be lying about something, by "accidentally" publically slipping that we aren't they might come to believe us.

1) It would be TOO suspicious if we start chatting away in the public forum as we have never done that so there seems illogical that we would start now

2) If we do it in a public forum, which one? Our root forum is the Civ3 DG forum but it would be rather odd to start there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it, just let's do it right so it will be more believeable.

To really pull it off we'd need an accomplice. Someone who's also in the game, on another team. We could meet in their or our general chat rooms and wait for 'lurker's' then put on a show of sorts.

Or, I was thinking, that someone could start a thread in the main PTW forum contesting the value of democarcy games and how they are run. This could lead to some arguments for and against demoracy games. In those arguments some of our team member's could let 'slip' some information about our game that would tend to support their agrument or knock another's down.

What those argumnets would be...I don't know; why don't those who are more creative than I, like the role-players, come up with something? it's a challenge to those that role-play so well!

BigFree, you make a good point but I think something like that would be really complex and prone to a screw up. We would have outside factors like people who aren't members of the game in there which is something we couldn't control. Plus if you have a lurker who reads that forum before reading this one and see us say something like "Did you guys see Firaxis to our north?" then they will be like "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? There is only ocean to the north!"

WhiteBandit was chatting with History Buff from GCA and we (actually it was WB's idea :b to bluff GCA by "accidentally" slipping that "CFC" founded a new city. He really panicked!!! We went away for almost 15 minutes before he answered back.

we have to do it slowly and in such a manner that they dont know about it , ....

it has to be "convincible"

maybe we could ask Mark to create a special forum that they can see and leak that anyone can see our "closed" forum , ......

That is not actually a bad idea....

In the PTWDG there's a public forum that people make public announcements in and generally 'trash talk' the other team's member, in jest of course.

If The ISDG had such a forum, if only to inform the general APO public as to what is going on in the game (the things we can tell), it would be a perfect place to put misinformation, or hints of it. The Civ3 DG forum wouldn't be a good place for this, I don't think, though maybe it might be....

Eh, I don't think that will work effectively. Mark isn't too keen on opening up new forums it seems like it. Plus we'd have to advertise this forum to the other teams, they wouldn't just "come across it."

I think this is more effort than it is worth actually. Doing this misinformation thing in a public chat room (their's or ours) would work just as effectively I think.
