oh and then there's Chicago's core curriculum FROM HELL.
still probably your best bet, despite all the required classes, its a bit silly to choose Tufts just because of the better location.

Well, you did make it to a fine university...

I do hope your tax issue works out. Also, write to the finatial aid office at Temple: it is just a chance but it might work..I got my university to give me a few thousand more in aid by explaining my situation.

I guess you will also have to look into education loans: you state might offer some and of course the Feds offer subsidized loans as well. It is pain to leave school with 20k in debts, but sometimes that is the price one has to pay.

Blah.. they cut the core significantly:

as of right now, you have to take:

2 quarters of calculus (specially a math orioented person), 2 quarters of biology, 2 of physical sciences

3 of Social studies, 2 or 3 of humanities, 1 or 2 of art and music, 2 or 3 of history (they call it civ)

you have to be proficient in one more langauge (pass a test, or take the classes) and you have to pass the physical exams and the swimming exam.

bio any chance i could place out of it with my 5 on the ap bio exam? i should probably ask them... or just find it on the website right now

everything else seems fine, except maybe social studies? i certainly hope i never have to take anything like native american women's history *shudders at the thought*

I am bitter against Tufts because they rejected me. Therefore, I advise Chicago, despite it being in Chicago, which is certainly a downside to anything.

Not going to happen. My art class was basic art hisotry, so it was nice and easy. The thing is, the more simple and fun they make it sound, the worse it is. You would not believe the sort of pains people I knew had with a class called "Cut and paste".

Yeah, a 5 on AP Bio will get you out. They do honor a few AP's, basically only the math and science ones.

You get to choose your classes, so you would never be forced to read such things if you don't want to. You will end up reading Socrate's apology and Plato's Republic. there is no way you get out of the UofC without having read both of those. Marx and Smith are also extremely likely. Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau also are almost totally unavoidable.

Plato's Republic is one of the most absurd pieces of garbage it has ever been my distinct displeasure not to have been able to avoid reading. The guy's theories have more holes in them than an Iraqi civilian, and they're totalitarian in some of the worst sorts of ways besides. Not to mention the guy kind of stole Socrates and then twisted him around to serve his own pseudo-evil purposes. *doesn't like Plato*

Rousseau's kind of cool though...not his general will stuff, which is just weird, but I like his philosophies on the state of nature and all.

Speer, yes, it's Giant Squid. And how is everyone's favorite person-who-is-not-a-Nazi-but-just holds-Nazi-views-and-has-a-Nazi-name doing? Have people stopped teasing you about that yet?

Let's see...first, he tries to define justice...the whole premise of which is flawed...you can't define a word through philosophy, because definitions are just going to be tautologies anyway. Then he says we can define justice by forming a just city, which is obviously bunk because you have to know what justice is before you can make a city that's got it. Then it turns out that his just city is basically ancient 1984 (I wouldn't be surprised if Orwell looked at Plato for inspiration, although I certainly haven't read up on the matter - his proles, outer party, and inner party are eerily similar to workers, auxilliaries, and guardians, and the Noble Lie is pretty evident too) Then he arbitrarily concludes that the justness of this city (and this city is just because Plato randomly says it is) is due to some weirdness he imposed on it, and therefore we should all impose weirdness on ourselves and be just. Oh, and the most valuable pursuit in life is philosophy which is defined as "having the exact same opinions Plato has"...meh...the guy could become an Objectivist with that attitude...okay, I'm done now.

Giant S - people have seemed to acclimate to his horrible username.
You'd think that he'd want a username of a more populist architect, rather than someone who built monuments for a government which devestated the lives of the WORKING PEOPLE.
I'd reccomend someone Finnish.

I'd also like to voice my opinion that although Socrates is wrong about some stuff, he is a damn cool guy.

Just visit the campus at Scavenger Hunt time...
my second year two guys built a small reactor that actually did create a miniscule amount of plutonium, so their house could claim that they built a breeder reactor. They had all the stuff in thier room....

they did it in my dorm. burton-judson courts, in matthews house.
two reactors were actually under construction for scavhunt, as well.

you're coming for the prospie weekend? joy of joys. i'll be here for that.

quote:
oh and then there's Chicago's core curriculum FROM HELL.

not so bad.

you can do 2-2-2 quarters of hume, fine art, and civ, or 3-2-1 of hume, civ and fine art, or 2-3-1 of hume, civ, and art.
then there's some physical sciences req, and a biosci req. and then 3 quarters of soc.
you can test out of everything except the hume, fine art, civ, and soc.
i myself never had to take any math or science classes; and i only have to take two quarters of civ and i'll be done with my core-- and i'm in my second year. most of my core was done in my first year.

quote:
bio any chance i could place out of it with my 5 on the ap bio exam?

if you don't plan on majoring in bio, yes. the science aps count, and the math aps count, but you still have to take a math placement exam.
all of your other non-language aps go to elective credit. language aps are put up against your language placement tests. whichever one is better they'll take.

what sucks here is you'll have to take a physical education placement test as well. DON'T HOLD THE PULSE READER TIGHTLY!!!!! i cannot emphasize that enough.

anyway, if you want to visit me here, come by. i'm 4-6029 on the campus phones, and i live in the burton-judson dorm.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Ola? she's awesome. she takes a long time, but it's always the perfect scoop.

housing is nice here. you send in your preferences and all of what you want/need, and they'll do their damndest to make 'em work. singles aren't that hard to come by, but they tend to be primarily in snell-hitchcock (the most conveniently located dorm) and in burton-judson; pierce is now non-smoking, but it has a kitchen; maxpav is the newest and has the most amenities; so on and so forth. they'll send you a whole book about it soon, if you accept.

courses by and large aren't bad. for hume, i did media aesthetics, which was only a 2yr old class when i took it... i'd suggest against it, though, since it's hit or miss with the profs who run it.
soc is a toss-up. i loved my power identity resistance class, but in all of them you end up reading many of the same books.

labs i hear stink. i never took 'em, so it don't matter to me.
