To Horde or Lead the Charge? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

What should our policy be on research? Shall we try to horde as much gold as we can, or shall we try to get the tech lead on the other teams?

Obviously, some of this will depend on the situation. If CDG attacks us, then going 100% on Construction isn't a good idea. Likewise, it won't be a while before we have to decide.

However, we will have to decide.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Do we have the capability and the desire to lead the charge into the Middle Ages and beyond?

We must not rely on others to do the research and dictate the price of tea in Carthage to us. Let us lead the way! Are we not a Ind/Comm civ, the kings of infrastructure? We cannot rely on the sale of techs or following-up research when the actions of our southern neighbors are erratic.

Let us be the first to show Medieval Infantry.....

and the first to bring them to Persia's DOOR!

(And if we don't have iron, we could still be the first to get, say, the Sistine Chapel.....)

Our lack of a nearby river will probably stunt our research for the near future. Before too long, cities 5 and 6 (?) will be placed down by th' river to the south of us, but it will be a while before we can exploit that source of commerce.

We may not be able to keep up with civs like GCA, who started on/near a river, and has a monopoly on the contact with CFC.

Trip is right. We probably can't out-research GCA.

1. But we need to be useful. So, we should go for alternate Technologies that others do not research, and technologies that can protect us from potential attack from CDG.

2. We should horde as much gold as we can & upgrade our units. & we will wait for any potential weakness in GCA & CDG, such as they attacking each other, and we will strike.

We can't lag if we are to benefit from the 3 way situation.

BTW, I think we are dealing with a 3 way situation, because I do not believe CFC has been contacted. Or, if they have, GCA and CDG would rather trade with us and have 'embargoed' CFC.

Tired of ads?

I still think that this is a "4 Civ" continent. We should definatley try to lead, or at least keep pace with the reasearch race; at least trying to trade for techs on an pretty much even basis with the other's so we don't fall behind them(teams on our continent) or the other teams. If we take the "horde" approach we could get screwed. So what if we have plenty of gold, without the proper techs, what are you going to upgrade to? I do not want to become anyones "b|tch!"

Suffering from ads?

The trick will be figuring out which techs they aren't going for that we can swap with them... Perhaps it's best just to go for the good military techs as much as we can. Wheel, Iron Working and Maths ASAP so we can find the Iron we (hopefully) have to our North.

So, er, not to hoard, but yes, to develop techs ourselves so we can lead the charge with our horde.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

We should be betting on the Iron more than any other military tech. Our land seems unlikely to get horses and in any case, horses are useless in the jungles which any supposed military operation will take place. Swordsmen, on the other hand will work wonders. When our swordmen/mercenary stacks approach CDG's cities, they will piss in their pants...

In Legion VS Immortal, Legion has an advantage. Since Num Merc+Swords stack functions almost like Legion, We have less to fear.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

From the looks of our land it's doubtful we'll get horses, but who knows, we might get lucky. On the other hand, I am confident we can get iron from our hills up north.
