It's also telling that even if they controlled the geographic composition of the ridings, the PQ couldn't use that to their advantage. That's how much the people wanted them out.
I think Charest did a good campaign, i.e. he did not make a public mistake.
Landry shot himself in the foot big time at least twice : the 4 day work week and the incentives for vacations. Charest jumped on what he - rightfully - said were symptoms of Big government.
The rise in the ADQ showed us that even in Quebec, there is a right wing movement developing. Landry alianated these people big time.

Anyhow, what you're saying about the PQ and targetted subsidies is all too true. Bunch of bullshit, that. Quebec spends more than all other provinces combined on developmental subsidies. **** 'em. The PQ's just handing out corporate welfare. It's the new face of the supposed socialists in quebec.

I agree, and the thing is : they were just getting worse! After 8 years they were just a bunch of arrogant ********.
Their getting rid of their most populist people (Chevrette & Brassard) is an indication of a power struggle within the party IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them both campaigning against Marois when there's a new leadership race.

Yup, they screwed it up by beening civilized, should
have never allowed the french to keep their laws,
culture, language and church (well the church was
a good, kept them backward for 300 years).
Pretty stupid thinking "civilized" people could just
get along, should have shipped the whole lot lot of
them to New Orleans like the Acadians. Or the English could be run out of Quebec with draconion laws. Eithier
way "it will finaly be over with"
Eithier way it's just uprooting hundreds or thousands of peoples lives and causing untold suffering, for WHAT???

This is getting nasty, fast. As always when separation is the subject.
And as far as "cans of worms" go: Charest said he did not want to reopen the constitutional issue... yet. I get the feeling that, if/when he does, he will want to get Quebec to sign it.
Being a federalist, i wonder how much he will give in to the pressures of the people, media and his own party to ask for more powers.

I really doubt it.

IMO any concession that the feds would be willing to make - or any demands that Charest will be willing to make for that matter - will be way beyond what the separatist movement would see as reasonable.
They would try to use that to revive their option: that's the difference i think it would make.
I don't see Charest being too greedy as far as asking for more powers. He's always been a federalist first. I guess it's a question of degrees: He knows he'll have to ask for some of the "traditional demands", he knows nothing is ever going to be enough for the separatist movement.
Does he have any aspirations of going down in history as the one who would have brought Quebec back into Canada? Does he feel it's worth the hassle? I don't know.
He's a career politician and i never trust them, by default, but he was just voted in so i guess we'll have to wait and see.

Ya wasn't it Parizeau (sp?) who moved the PQ to the right. He always struck me as the banker type. And I think Landry got into hot water after complaining about social groups and saying he preferred to deal with corporate execs.
From what I've read, the Liberal victory was more about changing governments rather than the end of separatism. Don't know if that is really true.

We'll see about that. I'm not as confident as you are.
I'd like to see hime tackle bill 101 / 178 though.
This seems to be the time for a real debate, something that hasn't happened for a long time when it comes to 178 and never - IMO - when it comes to 101.

doesn't matter what concessions the Feds may make,
the separatist movement only wants one thing,
Separation
