Last Updated Tue, 15 Apr 2003 0:46:36
MONTREAL - The Liberals won a majority government in Quebec Monday night, making Jean Charest the next premier of the province.
It is Charest's first victory as leader of the provincial party after stepping down as leader of the federal Progressive Conservatives.
The Liberals defeated the ruling Parti Québécois and Bernard Landry; and Mario Dumont's upstart Action démocratique du Québec.
All three party leaders won their ridings.
Calling it a mandate for change and renewal, premier-designate Charest, promised to work for all Quebecers.
"Today Quebecers gave the Liberal Party of Quebec a government in the service of its citizens. Quebecers have given us their confidence. We will live up to it," said Charest.
In his concession speech, Landry thanked party supporters and congratulated Charest.
"I have to congratulate very warmly the leader of the Liberal party who has conducted his troops to a very impressive victory which was owed to them," said Landry.
Speaking to dejected supporters, Dumont vowed to continue developing the party's relationship with English speakers in the province.
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his satisfaction with the vote, reading the results to guests at a state dinner in the Dominican Republic. The prime minister is there on an official visit.
"It is for me an element of satisfaction. It's a confirmation that the threat of separation has disappeared. This is very, very good for Canada, " said prime minister.
Charest's campaign focused on health care. He promised to cut government subsidies, tax credits to big businesses and trim the civil service. Charest also predicted Parti Québécois leader Bernard Landry would call another sovereignty referendum of elected.

Not a chance. The idea has been around for a very long time and one election is not going to make it go away.

yup -- PQ has had two terms and I read that no Quebec governmnet has ever served for 3 terms.
As for a dagger in the heart of separation, it may very well be . . . I understand that there are still a fair number of immigrants coming into Quebec . . . and immigrants vote overwhelmingly against separation. Does anyone have a sense of francophone versus anglophone/other birthrates and immigration in the province? Because demographics could kill the issue as a real threat in a way no politician ever could.

I'm not allowed personnal attacks, but I think this thread cannot be considered serious, just by looking at who posted a few times like he knew what he was talking about.
I wonder if the ADQ has good policies about speed limits and such...

Maybe so but compared to Landry and Charest he's the man IMO.
Landry gave taxe credits to every company that established itself in the new Industrial land in Laval, which led to emptying the industrial region in St-laurence and in the old industrial region of Laval. That results in empty buildings that owners have to compensate for. Also, he gave (sorry i dont know what the word is in english) subventions to companies that didn't need it like Bombardier and left other companies in need die. That is not what I call "building a prosperous economy". Let me translate what he said:" I told you that I would not take money out of your left pocket, I didn't and I never will!" Yea but he took a whole lot out of our right pocket though.
Also, it was Charest last hope to be prime minister of Quebec so he put it all on the table. He encouraged 5$ a day daycare (which we already have enough of) that increases province spending, He also wants to increase the number of employees in the medical center that result again in larger provincial spending. All that without taking into consideration that within 10 years there will be 44% of the workers in Quebec will be retired. That makes 44% of people who dont pay taxes no more and get paid by the governemet.
Sp tell me, how can we cope in ten years? The only way I see it is to raise taxes...again.
Mario Dumont wants to reduce the human ressources in every ministries where he to put more people at work in hospitals. Also, Mario Dumont,s advisor in the medical departement are people that have experience there and have always worked there....unlike Landry's medical minister which, at his last job, was an accountant for an aviation company.
Landry and Charest are old and only want power before they go away for ever and they are ready to screew the people just to obtain it.
Mario Dumont has everything to prove because he is relatively new in politics. I dont think what he says is all true but I believe him a lot more than I beleive Landry or Charest for that matter.
(if I were able to tell it all to you in french I would have been able to make my point a lot clearer. I dont know what many words are in politics so it's hard to get my point across. But trust me, I know a whole lot about politics, my job also depends on it.)
Spec. *frustrated because he knows he didn't get his point across*
