And now, the Iraqi information minister talking doll
Friday, April 18, 2003 Posted: 4:53 AM EDT (0853 GMT)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- People who joined the cult-like following of Iraq's wartime spokesman Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf can now buy a talking doll and hear him say things like "our initial assessment is that they will all die" as often as they want.

The Connecticut company Herobuilders.com built the doll and also sells others that make fun of Iraq war allies President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The company made the "Iraqi Dis-information Minister Action Figure Doll" of the former Iraq Information Minister al-Sahaf, who disappeared from Baghdad after the invasion of U.S. troops whose presence he had bizarrely denied.

TV viewers around the world took a liking to his often colorful statements that became the butt of television talk show jokes in the United States. A Web site, www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com, drew 4,000 hits a second after its launch a week ago.

The doll says, "There are no Americans infidels in Baghdad, never. Our initial assessment is that they will all die. I am not scared and neither should you be. They're not even within 100 miles of Baghdad."

Herobuilders.com owner Emil Vicale said he wanted to take advantage of the craze and built the doll of al-Sahaf dressed in trademark army fatigues and black beret to be sold for $35.95.

"We were able to obtain a digital copy of his voice, his sound bites," Vicale said. "We were able to digitize that and impregnate that on a voice chip."

Other dolls sold by the same company include "Saddam Insane," "President G.W.," "Butcher of Baghdad," "British Ally," and "Osama is Drag" -- al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a pink dress.

Only in the US. I wonder if Sahaf is under warrant by pr agencies who might want to hire him. Else he could make a killing by going Hollywood.

Soundbites:
"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"
"No I am not scared and neither should you be!"
"We have given them a sour taste"
"They're not even [within] 100 miles [of Baghdad]"

But they should have given him glasses, and a darker uniform. Currently, the doll just looks like an ordinary soldier with a beret.

A little cheapy attempt.... totally amateur... needs the glasses and actual recorded sayings and then you'd have a winner.

The cool part for those who want to make a "real" effort is that this company can't claim rights to the likeness of al Sahaf or his voice, so anybody can make a better successor.

quote:
Regime's spin doctor committed suicide, claims Iran

JIM MCBETH

MOHAMMED al-Sahhaf has made his last exaggerated utterance, according to reports from Iran that claim "Comical Ali" has committed suicide.

Allied commanders are viewing the claim with caution, fearing it may be further evidence of Sahhaf’s now legendary obfuscation of the facts.

The United States’ military chiefs reckon he is hiding in Syria and not in a heavenly queue waiting for God to grill his stomach, a fate, suggested Sahhaf, of allied casualties of the war.

The former Iraqi minister of information, whose daily briefings to the media lapsed into the surreal, disappeared last week before the fall of Baghdad. His last words to the press were a fitting end to a fortnight of hyperbole, obscure Muslim invective and the litany of claimed victories.

He told them: "You are now going too far from reality."

The Arab internet publication, Al Bawaba, and the IRNA news agency, both based in Tehran, reported that Sahhaf was dead by his own hand.

They based the report on statements from some of the 1,000 Iraqis who have taken refuge along the border strip near the town of Dehloran in the Ilam province of western Iran.

According to the Iraqis interviewed, the one-man propaganda machine "had taken a rope and hanged himself".

But the US military believe it could be a plan to divert the attention of special forces "snatch" squads who have orders to hunt, capture or kill the members of Saddam’s regime.

Sahhaf is one of those named in the most-wanted "deck of cards" with pictures and details of the deposed tyrant’s cohort.

A military source said: "We can’t confirm this, but we’re still looking for [Sahhaf] and other members of the regime.

"If he’s dead, that’s it. If he’s alive we’ll still be interested to talk to him.

"He told a lot of lies, but everyone could see that when he said no tanks were in Baghdad we were literally sitting just down the road."

Sahhaf achieved cult status with his performances during the war, producing such gems as: "There are reports that we have fired Scud missiles into Kuwait! I am here to tell you we have no Scud missiles and I don’t know why we fired them into Kuwait."

Enter the AD-FREE zone

If he did, (which I hope not), he at least will go down as probably the only "hero" of the Hussein/Baathist regime.

While the rest of them were hiding like dogs, he stood up and did his duty to the end, and if he took his own life, it's because he refused to be humiliated as a prisoner of his enemies. A lion among rabbits.

If he is alive, he could make a ton of money.

Oh yeah.

Even if he was somewhat involved in stuff, (he'd have to be, indirectly), I'd be inclined to let it go, as long as he wasn't directly a participant in carrying out or ordering crimes against humanity.

I think he's great.

If he is dead, the only true way to honor him is to tie him up with fishing line to make a marionette and pretend he still lives, a la "Weekend at Bernie's."
I agree that he might not have been a bad guy. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hussein had his family at gunpoint the whole time or something. Alas. Let us send him off by vociferously denying the existence of twenty-one guns.
