I actually think the fundies have good chances to gather much support in the near future.
Saddam has completely barred the road to power to the Imams. Religion wasn't a significant political force, and was only used to gather more support by the regime (in the few last months of it, when the regime wasn't laicist anymore)

The Imams know the current period is the time they can get to power, and they'll use the religious frustration of the population to gather support. The Sunnis will use the legitimate fear that Sunnis will suffer from revenge, and the Shiites will use the willingness to 'get back what is due'. Except if the Sunni fundamentalists are massively supported by the Sauds, I think the Shiites will win this one because they are more organized.

The complete absence of traditional political parties in Iraq (exiled parties don't count) means the divisions of the society will be handled by the only organized factions present : Kurd nationalists and religious organizations.

It is not sure Iraq will go fundy. But it is not unlikely, and efforts should be made to avoid it.

Not unexpected. For most Iraqis, the preferred order of things is

1. Elected leader
2. Foreign White Guys who can't speak their language.
3. Saddam

They celebrated because they moved up one on the ladder. However they want to continue moving up, and can't if US troops still reign.

BTW I think it's really funny that some of you guys are like "Yay, they're unhappy!"

The trick really is to get Iraq functioning quickly and set up a government that will be able to survive the inevatible civil war. The question is, will the US be there when it starts? If so, it will take the form of a war of liberation against the US.

Che, is the alliance between the Kurd communist party, the Kurd patriotic front and the US holding?

Well. Don't forget that one of the excuses of invading Irak was that it was a threat to the world because it had MDW. The pentagon claimed that the had PROOF that there were MDW. So now, the world must ask USA: Where are the mass destruction weapons?????????

Any evidences?
I saw how your troops found stockpiles of American anti-tank missiles and British SAMs that, gee, somehow got into the Iraqi weapons arsenal long *after* the sanctions were put in place. So what?
The only thing which I saw had "made in Russia" label was night vision goggle that's
a) not a military night vision goggle
b) could be bought here absolutely freely, easily and legally
c) in fact designed for hunters
d) cost around 75$.
Go ahead educate me, what else Russian eqipment your troops found?

Give them time. First they need to deliver those WMD from USA and put some Arabic letters on them. Fabrication of evidences it's not an easy process, it requires some time. But you can be sure sooner or later they will "find" many weapons of mass destruction. I guess it will be a huge arsenal.

Where, when and how you found a single Kornet?
You're just repeating words of your leadership which complained at the beginning of war that "we are doing not so well as we expected, because evil Russian sold some of their modern weaponry to Iraq. Blahblahblah. we know this but we have no proofs. blahblahblah.

If your leadership was unable to prove that Iraqis have Kornets, I doubt YOU can do this.

Just posted this in other thread on this topic, but since that one's likely to be closed I'll put it here:

Even though Americans have no historical memory, other countries still do. It's been less than a century since the last time Iraq was occupied by Western power, and given the brutality of that occuption (for one thing, it featured the first use of ariel bombardment as a means of "pacifying" a civilian population -- thank you, Winston Churchill) it's no surprise that the Iraqi response now is, in the words of an old big band tune, "I told you I love you; now get out."
