	Trepan - real or urban myth? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

I've been reading lots about trepanation. Basically it means to drill a whole in your head. Ancient way to cure anything, to 'let the demons out'.

Lack of terminology and ability to explain it in english, I provided this link to anyone who is interested:

So, could this have anything in it, or is it just some crap bunch of hippies did and now praise it?
The basic idea is to drill a whole into your skull. These days it's safe if you're in doctors hands and painless. Ok, and you have the hole in your head. Now there should be more blood in your head, activating unused parts of brain, or parts that are usually inactive. And that's supposed be the wonderfull, because well if you're brains function with more power, there are advantages.

Interesting thingie, what do you guys think? Obviously it has been labeled as not working, but then again there are dudes who claims it works. What's your take?

It sounds radical, sure. But with the knowledge and equipment these days, it's like going to dentist. The operation takes like 30min to one hour, is safe and relatively painless and doesn't leave big marks on your head. So now, please and go read the stuff in that site, about how it should work, and then come back and make arguments why it won't work, or why it works.

I find it amazing that you guys think a little hole in the head is something very bad and disgusting. The times we live are full of wars, people killing each other, we see horrible injuries in news on tv every night etc. You guys think knee surgery is something beautiful then?
You're not supposed to touch the brain at all anyway.

But I take it none of you cared to read about it more than two sentences, because it sounds so weird. I'm not here defending it, I'm here to defend decent arguments and discussion about this.

The reason I'm not contributing is that this used to make the rounds on the news magazines like 60 minutes 15 years ago. It was almost always universally debunked except in primitive cultures where there weren't other alternatives.

It mainly placebo. Drilling a hole in your head probably could lower headaches, so that could help you think better I guess.

Then again Im no expert in this field.

There's a great scene in the movie Pi where the lead character trepans himself with a power drill. Not for the squeamish.
