250,000 people die in the World every day. 3,000 just from malaria. 500 or so have died from SARS. SARS is a media event.
As for why more people die in Canada and China (and none in the US), maybe take a look at the health care available. Just an idea.

It's not like Canada has a third world health system. The only reason it didn't become an issue in the States is because they were lucky, nothing more.

Um, ok. You should probably tell that to the people in Canada on waiting lists to get simple surgeries.

That's a different situation than dealing with an emergency like this. The hospitals here did a good job of containing it overall, the disease was just a bit nastier than they were used to. Once they realized the danger, they did a good job of dealing with it. Same with the people in Hong Kong by the sounds of it. The US was lucky in that no cases sprang up there until after the disease was more fully understood, and measures had been developed to control it.

We were just unfortunate enough to get the first wave of the disease from some people that had been travelling in the affected regions in Asia.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Well, I don't think your facts are accurate. I see no reason to believe that Canada had people return with this earlier than we did. Do you believe that there are more Canadians traveling around than Americans? I know this jibes well with current prejudices, but I doubt it is really a fact.
In any case, you would think we would have had at least ONE person die.
Its odd to me that foreigners, whenever we succeed at anything, want, as a last resort, to attribute it to "luck". Yes, I guess we have been remarkably "lucky".

There's no cure or treatment for the disease and UN estimates are up to about 20% mortality now. How else can you describe the fact that you had no fatalities than being lucky? Is there some special treatment you've developed that you haven't bothered to tell the rest of the world?

Full PM-box? Change here!

Btw, tidbit of important info...the Chinese has a dozen cases of people who survived SARS readmitted for SARS again. They have been reclassified with other illnesses. That's a biggy.

It is true. Toronto was the first place outside of Asia that got hit.

What's your point? According to the WHO website, the US has 63 cases with 33 recoveries. That leaves 30 persons in the hospital. Even with 63 cases, it's too small for probability to apply correctly.

My point, dear UR, is that we've had no one die. Surely you understand the difference between being alive or dead?

That wasn't meant to be an anti-American slur. Geez you guys are getting defensive these days.

The point is that there is no cure, and about the only thing that can be done for patients is to isolate them, make them as comfortable as possible, then cross your fingers. There's nothing special about the US system that will change the odds of someone surviving, it's totally up to fate at the moment.
