Bush may not be on Alabama ballot in 2004 Full PM-box? Change here!

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS...t.ap/index.html

quote:
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) -- Unless Alabama's election law is changed, there could be one notable candidate missing from the state's 2004 presidential election ballot -- President Bush.
The problem is that the Republican National Convention is being held later than usual to avoid conflict with the Olympics, and the GOP won't choose a candidate until September 2 -- two days after Alabama's August 31 deadline to certify presidential contenders.
Republicans are asking the Democrat-controlled Legislature to change the law and extend the deadline until September 5.

After the Florida debacle, it'd be interesting to see what happens if all the Republicans there have to vote him in as a writein.

Well if they held it during the Olympics they wouldn't get the same network coverage.

After all, it is just a political convention.

Sorry to disappoint you leftists Full PM-box? Change here!

If you lot can skate around New Jersey's laws about replacing candidates, thereby replacing Torricelli the crook with Lautenberg, then Bush can certainly be on the ballot in Alabama. The Repubs still have a year and a half to fix this anyway

Yeah, they got around the whole Bush and Cheney being from the same state problem. (They're both Texan and the Constitution forbids a state's electors for voting for both a Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidate from their own state. That Cheney moved to Wyoming a few months before the election was no coincidence.)

It isn't like Cheney has no ties to Wyoming . He has always had a house there, he was born and raised there, went to school there, and representated the state in Congress.

And where were you when Hillary Clinton moved to New York a few months before her election to the US Senate .

Got spare money?

How is that relevant? If the state law is going to allow her to run for state office, then so be it, but Cheney circumvented the Constitution to get into national office. I'm not implying I support the constitution or anything like that, I'm just bringing up a point.

Bullshit! If Cheney moved a few months BEFORE the election, the electors would not be able to vote for a President and VP from their own state, because Cheney had already moved and changed his residency before the elections.

I'm saying he moved specifically to get around this requirement. My point was that laws can't stop a politician given a few months to work with.

Put an end to popups!

Well had he not moved to Wyoming he could not have been elected. I didn't mean he did so in an illegal fashion, he got around it by moving to Wyoming.

quote:

To surround (an enemy, for example); enclose or entrap.
To go around; bypass: circumvented the city.
To avoid or get around by artful maneuvering: She planned a way to circumvent all the bureaucratic red tape.

By circumvent, I mean it in the literal sense: go around. No more, no less.
