The perspective is fine. I don't know what the hell Boris was talking about.

The background is really boring, however. One good looking pillar, but that's about it. Also, where the hell is Patton's left arm? It looks like it isn't there. Other than that, it's a good painting. Keep practicing; you seem to have some talent.

His arm wasn't showing in the photo, Drake. Well.. I just worked with what I had. The background.. well I couldn't do much. I had little time... 2 1/2 months.. I would of liked to put two extra weeks into the art, but the art show was rapidly approaching.. so I had to go with something simple but effective. Neo-classicial paintings usually had simple backgrounds. Like the Oath of Horatii by Jacques Louis David.. a model painting I referred to many times. I didn't want to overdo it and make it look like one of the rococo paintings that were done before the French Revolution.

Of course. He did one of my favourite paintings, "The Death of Socrates". Look at the seated figure on the left with the papyrus under his chair. It's Plato - David's comment on what came from this event.

Okay I admit.. my Patton painting is a little far from many of David's... but I am proud of it. I was kinda amazed myself. Here are my favorite Jacques Louis David paintings:

I changed the background of this image on the recommendation of my art teacher. This image seems a little brighter than the one I used.. and seems to be a bit different.. but nonetheless shows what I used..

Congrats, and keep up the good work! My sister is an artist, she deals mainly with watercolors. I have a painting of hers on my college wall! I personally like it more than the one you did, but it does hold sentimental value...

Nice painting, Fez, you're really getting better.

You chose an interesting "inspiration" (David is one of my favorites too), but don't forget that he had a strong sense of composition.

Take "The Oath of the Horatii", for instance.

Notice how the lines converge to the same point, balancing the figures and leading the viewer's eye to what he wants to highlight. Notice how the characters are being "boxed" by the arches behind them (the white lines I drawed). And the women at right are seemingly disturbing the balance, but they are nicely countered by the light/shadow difference behind them. There are other composition elements here, but the main thing is that, being from a classical painting background, which was somehow reminiscent of the early Renaissance (especially Piero della Francesca and Uccello, for the strong notions of composition and balance), David emphasized that aspect in his paintings.

Your painting suffers, in my opinion, from an unbalancing problem. The image of Patton is too heavy in contrast with the spartan background. Other than that, good work.

I'm by no means an art expert, just a mere spectator.

Alex, I don't think I forgot that. But you have to understand I wasn't copying David's style completely. Infact, I looked also at paintings by Rembrant. Those famous self-portraits aswell.

I don't see much of a unbalancing problem in it... if there was, somebody would of said something to me... afterall... well.. we got a different judgement. Maybe it might be my camera that is not doing proper judgement to my painting.. it is a good camera but the photo from the way I look at it seems 95% accurate, good but for details like that not good enough. I would rather have you all look at my painting in real life.

I think the main problem is the pillar.

Did you mean to have the pillar as the co-focus of the painting? In your work there is almost an optical illusion where the eye wants to put the pillar at the same distance as Patton but the brain wants to put it behind him. This may be the perspective problem that Boris mentioned.

If you didnt mean to have the pillar as a co-focus then the pillar is in too much detail and the lighting is confused. From the shadows on Patton, the light must be behind the pillar but the front of the pillar is brightly lit. If the light is from the front then the shadows on Patton are wrong and the far background (wall?) is underlit. Compare your pillar to the pillars in the oath of Horatii.

My art teacher helped me with the settings on the head.. it may seem misshaped to you, but I worked with what I had. I did the proper enlargements of the photo I worked with.

I still see nothing wrong with the pillar... but hey that is from my own eyes.

I also think the picture I took didn't do justice to my painting. I will try to snap some more under better lighting circumstances.
