	How can I id classical tunes? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Well, I sometimes hear pieces of classical music somewhere (or already know the melodies) but canīt identify them or their composers. Since I donīt consider myself an expert in classical music it is quite hard for me to find the right CDs. Of course I donīt have the time to test-play all CDs that might interest me in CD stores.

I once found a little website that offered wav. examples of the CDs they sold there, but they had only a small number of them - does anyone know something similar with a larger selection? Or other hints that are helpful?

Get yourself a peer to peer program, you can download anything you want. And no it wouldn't be pirating, most classical music has been in the public domain for a couple hundred years at least, according to the current laws.

Well, yes I thought of this too, but then I donīt know what it is before I dl-ed it. I have DSL, so it would be ok, but I probably still had to dl lots of stuff before finding the right things. I only want to know if thereīs a better way to get what you want

Nah, but seriously, often classical tunes are used in tv advertising, or in trailers for tv shows, and I think "damn, you know that melody, it is great!" - but since I donīt know title or composer Iīm unable to get it somehow....

Maybe I should bombard those tv stations with mails asking what music they use

I don't see how they could have any legal basis on that score (pun intended). About all they can lay claim to would be the artwork on the cover. Though I admit that I don't exactly know what the laws are in that regard. It's definitely a shady area.

Give a bad description of it in rec.music.classical and you'll get a thousand good suggestions in return.

P2P is actually rather bad when it comes to finding classical tunes. Even if we discount the fact that a true classical audiophile would want a source that offers a selection of multiple conductors and performances for each piece, we are still stuck we the problem that you cannot find a FULL symphony or opera on a P2P source.

You can't find the full fifteen minute 3-track Moonlight Sonata or the 70 minute 4-track Beethoven's 9th or... You get my drift.

BTW, public libraries tend to have a collection of classical CDs up for loan. I recommend checking it out as an introduction.

ACtually I've been thinking about this alot too.


I decided to being downloading a huge bunch of classical midi songs.

Ture - they aren't good , but

a) I have a good wave synth (Win Groove - search for it)
b) it gives you a good idea of the music
c) it's a small file - downloadable on 56K
d) there's partically no lack of classical midi files.

I had a b*tch of a time trying to get (I might have spelt these wrong as I don't have the sheet music in front of me...) Orlando di Lasso's "Bon jour, et puis quelles novelle?" about 500 or so years old. Unfortunately the version I got (and perhaps the only audio clip I'm ever gonna find) was quartet group singing only the first half of the song. I have the sheet music, I have a .midi I made, but I really want a full choral presentation.

I always loved that song; fun to sing (unless you're a baritone ).

Likely will have to pay for something like that. P2P programs are rife with the well-known warhorses, but anything lesser known is not usually there. Although I was lucky to find about a third of the Bruckner symphonies on Kazaa, so who knows?

BeBro, if you can carry a tune, record a snippet on a mic and post it. We'll see if anyone can recognize it.

The recordings are copywrited...look at the back of any classical CD, and you'll see the copywrite symbol. If a classical radio program plays such a CD, they have to pay royalties to the record company. Believe me, the legal basis is sound.
