Help Tingkai visit Tokyo Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

I'm off to Tokyo next week for four days, but I don't know much about the city.

Any suggestions for the following:
1) Historical sites;
2) Museums;
3) Bars;
4) Clubs with live music (rock or jazz); and
5) Cool places to hang out just to soak up the atmosphere.

A friend suggested that I should go to Kyoto for one day. Is this good advice?

Put an end to popups!

The Imperial Palace offers tours.

If you have 500 bucks to blow at one place, Shinjuku has tons of karaoke bars.

Tokyo Tower is kinda tacky, it's just a bigger Eiffle Tower.

Way out of my price range and I wouldn't go to a karaoke bar if it only cost $10, unless karaoke is a euphemism.

I know Tokyo is expensive so I'm budgeting $200 a day, not including hotel. Is that too much, or not enough?

It's changing. My friend was there last year, he said some things are still outrageous, but their recession may be bringing prices back to our planet.

Besides, major fighting game tournaments are over in japan. I see no reason to go.

There aren't many historical sites in Tokyo, between Curtis LeMay and redevelopment. Kyoto and back in a day doesn't give you much time to see stuff, but Kamakura is much closer and has a number of cool sites close together.

To hang out and just to look at the area and peoplewatch, Shinjuku, Yoyogi and Harajuku are all cool, and are adjacent stops (IIRC, there may be one more in there somewhere, but they're at most a four stop spread) on the Yamanote line, which is the main loop line on the Tokyo train system.

Harajuku is well known for the outrageous and frequently hilarious street fashions, and it's the goth, punk, and wannabe hang out. Definitely the best peoplewatching area in Tokyo.

Yeah, but if you're lucky you'll get to see a magical girl being swept up by a beam of light

Anyway, as far as Tokyo goes, the number one must-see place is probably Akihabara.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Take the tour of the Imperial palace and make sure you go to Owano (spelling?) park. It's the place with all the cherry blossoms which you see in all the postcards and travel books plus all the major museums are located there.

Tokyo is a great city I would go back in a heart beat if it wasn't so expensive.

Oh, yeah. Don't go to the supposedly super cheap electronics district. I forgot the name but it's in all the guide books as supposedly a cheap place to pick up Japanese made goods, but, it's not. Just about everything there I could buy more cheaply in the US and the warrenties don't work if you take them back home.

I concur entirely with Oerdin, he hit the nail on the head. Akihabara is a big waste of time and money.

Go to Kyoto if you like shrines. Personally, I do, so I thought it was great. If you do, and you go there, try the moss garden shrine (forgot what it's called, kokadera or something).

Of course, if shrines aren't your cup of tea, Kyoto probably isn't your place. I didn't do much at Tokyo when I was there, so I can't really comment on that.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Having been to both Korea and Japan I can tell you just about everything more then 50 years old has been recreated using "Feroconcrete" as the English language guide books say. War has been a ***** to the historic monuments of these two countries.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'll definitely check out the Imperial Palace. Harajuku sounds cool.

I have to decide in the next couple of hours whether to stay in Ginza or Shinjuku. I leaning towards Shinjuku. Sounds like a more interesting area.

For some reason, Japan is the only country where girls think I am cute. I wish you luck.
