This might be possible to make work for adults in addition to embryos due to the fact that Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cells (MAPC's) are showing themselves to be possibly equivalent to stem cells of embryonic origin in many other stem cell applications. To give you an idea as to just how much potential these MAPC's appear to have consider the following. A chimeric mouse embryo was created by fusing several adult mouse derived MAPC's with an ordinary mouse embryo at the blastocyst stage. The chimeric mouse was found at birth to have MAPC derived cells of every tissue type composing a significant portion of it's mass. The MAPC cells were apparently able to differentiate into every cell type just as effectively as the original ES cells. The experiment has now been repeated successfully several times. It would seem that given the correct micro-environment it is possible to culture any and every cell type using only cells derived from an adult. Already the conditions needed to coax these MAPC's into a few dozen tissue types have been discovered.

Plato1003, you just gave an example of a bisexual who didn't accept his bisexuality until much later.

Becareful about how the word "environment" is used as well. In a strictly biological sense, it means any factors outside the organism. You can say the environment influenced the sexuality of a child if, for example, you've followed the studies showing that the more older brothers you've had, the more likely you are to be gay. In that case, IIRC, the environment of the womb becomes sensitive to male hormones and starts to guard against them, which may affect the development of certain parts of the brain, resulting in homosexuality.

That's the environment influencing sexuality but it's not a choice.

an interesting thread. i'll comment, that i also DO think that choice can possibly factor into sexuality, but that the large majority of the time, it does not.

This goes along with my other theory, that most (if not all) people are really bisexual, and most just havn't realized it; due to a variety of factors, mostly sociological.

i can't really back that up with anything more than my own personal observations, but nonetheless, i think it's true, and i just wanted to voice my opinion

Not yet. What works for other animals does not necessarily work with humans. We see that with cloning, so why not with this?

Starchild: So your genotype determines everything that you do in life? Look at alcoholism. People can be born with a predisposition to alcholism, as they would be to a particular sexual orientation. Whether the orientation expresses itself depends on the individual, and the environment. An alcoholic can prevent himself from ever becoming an alcoholic by never taking a sip of alcohol. The same with homosexuality.

Alcoholism does not equal sexual orientation. Obiwan, that is very skewed. But as you are one of those religious nuts I am not gonna bother trying to talk sense with you.

And to hell with you saying homosexuality can be prevented! How the heck can you know that? The way you are stating it is that I should never have a relationship in my life, ever... stay the hell out of my life and please, don't get involved in politics.

There is no genes for your preference. Being gay or not and liking ice cream or not could be roughly said as the same thing. Its mostly enviornmental but you have no real control over it.

I'd probably die before I have another bite of pistachio, straight guys would be repulsed at the idea of being forced to have gay sex.. yada ya.

The process that you describe is enviornmental. During exposure to such conditions, your body will react a certain way.

Basically anything outside of your genes is enviornmental.
