And now for something completely different Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Just a random thought- can we do something towards getting those horses under our control sooner rather than later? Since it doesn't look like we're going to get the jump on Goldville vs CDG unless we get a settler down there now (and maybe not even then) maybe we should start planning for our counterattack/defense. It'd be quicker to snag horses than it would be to snag iron, too.

Horsemen aren't too bad against Immortals if we can do the attacking, and uh...

We DO have the materials for knights in our grasp.

Maybe we could keep an eye towards saving up some cash for our OWN massive-upgrade fest when Chivalry comes into our hands.... doesn't look like CDG has any horses, but they might have Saltpeter one day- perhaps we should make plans to hit them before they can make fire-sticks that go BANG.

Suffering from ads?

The problem, my friend, is that we would need Horseback Riding to make those horses worth anything.

Plus, the Horsemen's mobility is completely nullified by the jungle. I'm of the opinion that the Swordsman's extra attack is worth more than the Horseman's ability to retreat in this jungle. If it had been on the open plains, then I could agree with you, but with our current terrain those Horsemen just don't pack enough of a punch.

Besides. If we were to engage CDG in full-scale warfare, we'd need to destroy stacks, not just plink away at them and retreat when the battles don't go favorably. If we don't kill an Immortal with our attack, that means 1 more unit the next turn which could pretty easily kill one of our units. As it is, we'll need a huge number of NMs to protect our armies... the lack of that extra attack for the Horsemen means just that many more Immortals which will be given the chance to counter-attack our stack.

Until we get Knights, Swordsmen will be our best friends, and those horsies won't be as good.

Besides, upgrading Warriors is much easier and much more fun.

At least you're looking for possibilities.

You're the best military advisor the MOW has ever had...

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Horsemen cost the same as Swordsmen right? I would rather build Swordsmen since any war would be a grueling 1-tile per turn affair, mobile warfare is out of the question and so is mobile pillaging. If we want to pillage them, we send Mercs, if we want to counterattack, we keeps swordsmen in 3-tile spaced cities connected by roads and murder their immortals.

Increase Your PM Length

Horses will be useful, and they are close, but as is argued above their short term usefulness is little. Remember that no other civs know about those Horses, in contrast to our Iron, so we can feel relatively assured of getting those Horsies sooner or later. And when we do, it'd better be before we get Chivalry....
