My vote goes to the atom bomb. Aside from saving japanese and american lives at the end of ww2- it has served little purpose but fill billions of lives with even more fear and drain the economies of many nations.

Um... it probably prevented WW3 between the US and USSR, so I'd say the atom bomb was a good invention in the end.

And most convential arms races lead to war. Witness the naval race between Britain and Germany prior to WW1. There is no doubt that without the threat of atomic annihilation the USSR and US would have met on a battlefield in Eastern Europe. The 'bomb' was a guard against that, because there was always the fear that the opposition may use it if things became too dire.

The car. Ruined everything. Big oil came about, polution, greenhouse gasses and global warming. The population got out of shape and lazy. The 'ME' generation came about. Society degraded. Instant gratification and the loss of patience. Endless ****ing stupid assed macho commercials. Millions of acres burried under blacktop...

Now, society is built around cars. People live out of town and work in town. Can't go back.
