Alot of my games seem to be over just when things start getting good and I start really getting modern techs. I almost always end after the 2050 retirement and I never continue playing on. I am wondering if many of you do continue to play on afterwards? I think I am going to start continuing my games on to the very end. I would really like to get some of these high level techs that I have never been able to get. Some of you must really be good to be able to achieve a science victory before 2050. That is downright admirable!

Nope. I guess I would if the modern techs were a mystery to me - but they're not so there isn't any point.

I can't remember the last time one of my games made it to the 1800s. That includes SS wins. My last game ended around 1500, and I was midway though the industrial age (researching mass production, I think).
I play primarily on Monarch. Since the AI gets bonuses (growth, production, research, AI-to-AI trading), the tech pace moves pretty quickly, especially early in the game, before I've had a chance to do serious damage to the AI . Later, assuming things go well, I can chime in with a 4-turn tech pace by the industrial age. Players who go the "peaceful builder" route tend to finish even earlier, since they don't break the AI, so the tech pace is even quicker.
Emperor & Deity move even faster.

On the higher levels I just can't get alot of those bloody modern techs. I normally check the year to see how I am doing and also of course the AI civs. For example when I am in 1940s I should have the techs for destroyers, battleships, carriers and aircraft. If I don't I assume that means I am behind on tech.

Sometimes I play after 2050 if it has been a tough game. I enjoy being able to use radar artillery, stealth bombers, etc. on the enemy. To me, the modern era warfare is the most fun, and the score is irrelevant...so occasionally I'll venture past the cut off date.

Maybe my memory mix this with the other peaceful victories, but I continue only a few times, and that's to go totally warmongering with nukes

Rarely, and by that I mean only once. That was the only game that got that far. My other games are usually over in the mid 1700s. In the one game where 2050 retirement came I continued to play to find out what the other advances and units were like.
Would I play past 2050 again? I don't know. If it ever comes up again, I'll know.
