Why would English pubs keep on hand a large supply of Bud? I mean, when much better beer is also on tap?

Yes, but not the British, so English pubs would not stock large quantities of it all the time.

I guess part of seeing the world is NOT drinking the local ales either...

Untrue. I know a British person who likes Budweiser. Cold, even.

A British person? Unless he is a billionaire, He (or she) alone surely could not justify the pubs of Portsmouth being well stocked of Bud, or have enough to supply 5000 drunken US sailors.

Natty Ice? :shudder:

Sadly, I must admite to consuming vast quantities of natty ice at college frat parties. The good news is after enough of them they stop tasting horrible and just begin tasting bad.

I can't believe a carrier went up there though.

I'm so pissed. The navy sucked so bad in the Clinton years. We never went anywhere far from our mission path. I have never been to a port of call outside of the mediterranean and the middle east. The navy seems so much better today.

Put an end to popups!

we stopped in Haifa.

Also when I was flying out to meet my ship we flew into Tel Aviv. I was only in the airport there. And we never actually entered the airport. We were left outside . That is where we boarded the COD plane (the planes that carry people and mail and land on air craft carriers)

That's cause Clinton only gave the USN a maintenance budget for 8 carrier groups when we had 11...

As a result, our 3 conventional carriers are in the crapper.

Aren't those carriers used in East Asia, because Japan doesn't want any nuclear vessels sailing around it's waters?

Or so I've heard.

AMericans stick with Bud because its always mediocre at best and its what they know. I've been to a couple of British pubs and it was generally a crap shoot with British beer. Simply because I didn't know what sucked and what didn't.

well I like Newcastle. Considering it is imported from there, I have to figure they have it over there . In fact I've been drinking almost as much newcastle brown ale as samual adams lately

And yes I was in a land locked state- I just had a thing for ships since I was a kid. Had to try it out. No problem for me. I have a strong stomach and never got sick. Although I was on a carrier. Those don't move much. The hurricane we skirted around moved it quite a bit though. And I was also on a small helicopter carrier (much smaller than the modern LHA's), that wasn't too bad though.

And yes I do believe Japan doesn't like nukes (no pun intended) near their land. So we have always had conventionals station up there. The Kennedy is stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. It was supposed to be a reserve ship or something- but they still go on deployments. And I think the other conventional is in San Diego.

12 carriers did seem excessive in the 90's when I was in. We never did anything and never got in any major wars. but after afghanistan and Iraq, I think they have proved their worth.

I saw the Conie T pull into to San Diego day one back in late 62 or early 63. I was on Guard duty at Gate 9A, on Harbor blvd at US Naval Training Center.
The Kittyhawk did an operation with us in Taiwan back in Jan, and Feb. 64. The other carrier was the Hornet.

Sheffield hasnt got that many people living there, try shaving a couple of hundred thou of that figure. But nevertheless it's quite big tho.

I agree with the person who said we would have no reason to stock large quantities of bud. Euro 96 i dont remember, but i blame it on the Wednesday fans, they have to turn to something.

You are correct, currently some fastpaced negotian is going on to get permission to stage a CVN out of Japan.

If that fails, we may have to come up with a few new choices. Top on the list is Singapore, which has built a Carrier-capable pier for our usewhen we pass through. I've also heard talk of building entirely new facilities on Guam, since we're also starting to station SSNs outta there.
