Where are you starting from? London, I assume? It is probably cheaper to book it all together, i.e. London -> LA -> Sydney out, and Sydney -> London back on the same ticket. From LA to Sydney, you have Qantas of course, and also United and American. Round trip from SD is around ~2400-2500 with nonstop from LA to Sydney, but that doesn't necessarily break down to half if you one-way it.

You'd have to fly from LA, and either catch a ride with someone coming down from there, or else catch a connecting flight to SD.

Just checked on travelocity - with advance purchase restrictions, one way coach fares are a little under $1200 from San Diego, change at LAX then nonstop.

I remember about a year ago some of my old college friends booked some sort of special deal with United where they payed $2500 dollars and get to make five stops any where in the world as long as 1) all flights were completed in one month 2) they kept flying in the same direction I.E. if you fly from London to New York then you had to keep flying west around the world until you get back to London.

Check and see if they're still offering a deal like that as it may make your multistop vacation cheaper.

Another sweet trick I learned was to fly A to B with a stop at C to change planes... only you never make it on to the second plane. Ussually the airline will let you get on a plane a day or two later at no additional charge.

I used that little trick on a flight from Bangkock to LA and I got a free stop over in Tokyo. It works and best of all it's free.

IRR=Inactive Ready Reserve. The IRR is a way the Army tries to hold on to people who have decided to leave the service. After you leave you get stuck in the IRR for two years and if their is a war then you automatically get returned to millitary service.

My time in purgotory is almost over and soon a I will be 100% civilian again.
