This is an outrage! Survey says Pittsburgh is second most beautiful place in the USA! Put an end to popups!

Clearly, Pittsburgh is the most beautiful place in the US. The nerve of USA weekend magazine....

Pittsburgh: 2nd Most Beautiful Place in US

May 9, 2003 11:25 am US/Eastern
Pittsburgh (KDKA) When you think of the most beautiful places in the country, images of Hawaii, the Grand Canyon or the California coast may come to mind; but a new survey says Pittsburgh's beauty beats them all.

With its stunning view of the downtown skyline, Mt. Washington is the place most Pittsburghers take out-of-town visitors to show off the city. The skyline sparkles at night, which is why USA Weekend Magazine ranked it as the second most beautiful place in America.

The ranking comes as no surprise to some Pittsburghers.
"You come up here you see the whole city and everything -- it's beautiful!" -- Stanley Kaminski, Mt. Washington

"You got the rivers, the awesome stadiums over there. You can't beat it! That's why I live up here." -- Mike Johnson, Mt. Washington
The magazine solicited opinions from all over -- including travel writers and relatives for its list. They had to keep in mind how publicly accessible the spot was -- and that it was reasonably well-known.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most Beautiful Places in the US
Source: USA Weekend Magazine (#1 being the most beautiful of all)
1. Red Rock Country, Sedona Arizona

2. Nighttime View From Mt Washington In Pittsburgh

3. Upper Mississippi River

4. Na Pali Coast, Hawaii

5. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Ca
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of the top contenders who fell just short of the nighttime view from Mt. Washington include the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, tropical paradise Na Pali Coast in Hawaii and the Upper Mississippi River.

The only place ranked more beautiful in the upcoming issue is Red Rock Country in Sedona, Arizona.

The entire story will run in the May 16th issue of USA Weekend Magazine

it might be a beautiful city skyline but the way I would view the "most beautiful place" would mean that pretty much any place I would pick would have nothing man-made involved

Flubber: it is silly IMO, to distinguish between those types of beauty. In both cases, it's pure visual joy. Why limit yourself to manmade, or natural objects?

I don't LIMIT myself-- I have seen many beautiful city skylines and other manmade things and do appreciate them, but for me, nothing manmade I have ever seen has come close to some of the marvellous constructs of nature. I don't know what I would choose as my most beautiful place but there would not be any building involved.

The reason the skyline of Pittsburgh looks good is that it is framed by the rivers, so you get this nice triangle of skyscrappers.

Now, as a conceited NewYorker, here are some nice pics from the Empire Sate Building:

looking northeast

looking east, towards queens (the solitary building is queens only skyscrapper.

looking south, towards were the WTC once stood

and looking west, toward the Hudson and Jersey beyond.

and no, i did not take these pics, but found them online.

And Shi: they did not say Pitsburgh was the most beatufull city (cause it sure ain't!), just that one specific view from Mt. Washington was chosen as best. get over it

Yea! Pittsburgh really is gorgeous, now that it's no longer a steel town. The hilly topography has prevented the maniacal zone-and-pave mentality that affects so many cities; it's more European in feel, and easily the greenest urban space I've ever seen. And while the view of thee skyline from Mt. Washington is indeed spectacular, my favorite view is the skyline's sudden appearance as you enter the city via the Fort Pitt tunnel; it's like the opening shot of a movie, and I've literally heard people gasp when they see it for the first time.
