BAGHDAD -- Iraq sits atop a sea of oil, but its citizens now wait in lines that stretch for miles to buy a tank of gasoline.

At 4 cents a gallon, a fill-up remains a bargain, but that's small compensation for having to wait up to 10 hours in line.

They are only waiting in line now because of shortages. It sounded like it's always been that low. Even if the oil is free, i thought it cost more that 4 cents a gallon to refine and distribute it.

( I am a car driver. In any case, air pollution is not such a big problem since electricity utility is government owned, and they usually keep their **** clean, water and land pollution, .. These are bad. )

well, perhaps not, specially if you don't have to ship it overseas. Unless it is heavily subsidized to get to 4 cents a gallon.

Perhaps they have refined gasoline pipes going around.

still that does sound cheap. DIRT cheap. As soon as we sign a peace deal with the new puppet government, I am going for a roadtrip.

in 2000, gas prices rose to record levels... yet the supply prices remained unchanged... Exxon/Mobile increased their profits 75% during this time. so roll your eyes at yourself

there have been numerous investigations into gas prices by politicians- including in my state.

The reason why prices jump so fast and decline so low is the refineries price their product based on what they expect the supply will be in 30 days or so. So basically they play a guessing game at what to price their product. I hear that many U.S. refineries struggle to break even.

Well there is a reason that you won't see many stand alone gas stations anymore... they don't survive. They now have to rely on their in station store to make any real kind of reasonable profits.

On the way home form a golf course out in the sticks, I stopped at an old 2 pump place, and the guy actually came out, pumped the gas, cleaned my windshield and checked the oil. I was so shocked that the next day, I figured that due to all the beer we drank, it must not have really happened. The tank was almost full though.
