Long time Civ series player... Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Hello all,

I have played all three of the Civilization games from Sid Meier, finding all three to be completely addictive and fun to play for hours on end through all the various stages of my life up 'till now. (I'm almost 27, started playing around the age of 12 or 13). I've been interested in Freeciv for quite some time now, and more interested in Linux, and I find myself longing more and more to spend the majority of my time in a Linux OS environment at home. Enter my need for Freeciv. I have CivIII and PTW for Windows, but obviously to be able to play a Civ game in Linux, I'd prefer to play and develop graphics, maps, scenarios, etc. for a project that won't go away like most commercial games. Freeciv obviously fits this need, ...almost.

I would love to get more involved in Freeciv, but the more I search for info and good discussion groups about it, the more I find that the discussion about Freeciv is sort of non-existent.

So my questions:
1) What sites do you frequent the most for current, ongoing discussion about Freeciv?
2) Is there any type of "fansite listing" webpage out there for Freeciv? (I haven't really found an all-encompassing one so far)

Thanks in advance for any of your comments...

Signed,
Trapped in Win2k

Tired of ads?

Welcome caveman, i share the same sort of sentiment about working with Freeciv. Besides the old fashioned graphics (unless you use civ2gfx of course) there's a certain charm you miss in the recent versions of Civ. Plus it shines in MP thanks to its micromanagement functions. Sort of a Civ2-pro.

You don't actually need to run Linux to enjoy it. Even the windows version is perfectly playable. You miss out on some functions however, like the CMA (city management agent).

For info, well... there's this forum at Apolyton of course . Information about current (longturn)Freeciv games can also be found at http://forums.civ.org.pl

But for the serious discussions you'll have to check the mailing lists. Discussions about modpacks, graphics go on in freeciv-data and freeciv-general. Most of the action takes place in freeciv-dev however. Details for signing up can be found at www.freeciv.org. The archives are available at arch.freeciv.org

"discussion about Freeciv is sort of non-existent"

There is a little discussion in this forum, but almost all other Freeciv discussions take place on the mailing list freeciv-dev. It is a developer forum, though.

Oh, and there is the #freeciv channel on irc.freenode.net. Lots of players and developers hang out there.
