All the more reason to buy fancy cars... cars get jacked here ridiculously especially by 13 year old young boys who do it as a sport... people probably try to pretend to be rich by having fancy stuff... having a new car (especially when there's a high risk of it getting stolen or what not) would make you seem even richer and make more people want to buy that ****.

Oil derricks are hardly used anymore. Probably just decoration or just hasn't been moved. It could be a drilling or maintenance rig, but I doubt anybody is drilling nowadays...

Derricks and pumps used to be everywhere, and many still are sitting there.
As Dan notes, they're not in use. Oil prices are too low.
Doesn't pay to bring it up. Especially since we're so busy stealing Iraqi oil.


BTW, that's a cotton field it's sitting in, which means the picture probably is from around Lubbock in the panhandle.

Those pictures kinda remind of the area of Manchester I used to live in. For those that know Manchester, the three years I lived in Manchester I lived in Rusholme, Longsight and Moss Side respectively. Same kind of red brick houses, boarded up, but as Spiffor said the cars are less nice (had a jacked car burned in front of my house once, not a pleasant experience).

Manchester is kind of weird as the neighbourhoods are very ethnically separated (Rusholme is mainly Pakistani, Longsight white trash and Moss Side West Indian and West African), but rather intermixed with students (as the university is very near these neighbourhoods and the rents are ridiculously low). Moss Side particularly is known for gang warfare (Yardies), and when I lived there, there were 3 fatal shootings within 200 yards of my house. But the rent was real cheap

People probably do, and the ones that do are more likely to be the hard working ones, meaning less cash in the community and more hardship. Deprived urban areas only become more prosperous if people stay or come in, but this quite often means the original inhabitants not being able to afford living there anymore. In the 3-4 years i was in Manchester the Docklands went from abandoned warehouses to the new yuppie centre in the North of England, and all because of the money that came into the city after the IRA gutted it in 96 and in preparation for the Commonwealth Games last year.
