Why isn't this done by an independent commission that recommends the district boundaries and the politicians have to go along with it? That is what happens in the UK.

The redistricting really is a terrible idea. If they get away with it, new districts will be drawn every two years in every state (well, except Alaska and Wyoming.) There won't be time to do anything else, and we'll need a dozen new federal courts just to handle the appeals.

Do the Texas Republicans really want to see every GOP seat in every state with a Dem majority destroyed?

Of course it is. The final decision is by the Secretary of State but he can't change too much or the media would have great fun criticising his decision.

The beauty of our system is that the Local Government Commission simply work their way through all our local authorities, changing boundaries as they go. Then they go back to the start and do it all again. BUT they only have enough resources to do a few at a time so it takes them 20 years to get through the list. The system is so ponderous small scale manipulation is possible but wholesale change is not.

Note that the other party was in the minority in the House for over 110 years, being subjected to gerrymandering (more so than the current paln and to an extent unlawfull today) and being rolled over (including BS like like seating losing democrat candidate by unlawfully throwing out military votes for the republican opponent) continuously, without pulling BS like this. The Demos could dish it out for over a century, but could not take it for even 1 year. What bunch of spoiled brats.

I agree it's not a good move for the Republicans to push through redistricting legislation now, but the fact is fleeing the house to require a 2/3 majority is not an acceptable way of stopping a bill you don't like. This type of thing is against the law for good reason.

Iowa and New Jersey have something like this. Other states should adopt their system so we can end this farce. And if anybody thinks the Democrats are pure and holy on this issue, they should take a look at what happened in states such as Maryland, California, and North Carolina.

In California the redistricting plan must be approved by the voters of the existing district and legally the district must be "as compact as possible" so we don't have those southern style snake shaped districts that just go from one pocket of political supporters to the next.

In California, its the worst. Democrats redraw the lines so they assure themselves of victory. I agree with Sikander. Get rid of the district lines. When people vote, they vote either Dem, Rep, Lib, Gr, NL, etc. For every 0.5% of the vote each party recieves, the party sends one member to the legislature.

My friend in texas says that the republicans are only putting through their bills, made a card deck with the '52 most wanted Democrats' (like the most wanted iraq card deck) and are going to send the state troopers to arrest the demos.

Well Dame Shirley whatshername still found an underhanded trick equivalent to changing geographic boundaries - if you recall she attempted change in the demographics of some London constituencies by selling off council residences in marginal wards to potential Tory voters.
