--"I'll take another shot at Vinge. A Deepness in the Sky."

Some of his short stories were published in the 1960s, if not earlier. Don't think he qualifies.

He doesn't.

Btw, Wraith, I was thinking of Imran when I wrote the word "complaining." 'Cause that's what he does best.

Short stories are one thing, what I'm looking for are new novelists.

For example, if it were 1992 and this was a general book discussion group with the same theme, it would be OK to nominate Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities because, even though he was an established writer for 20 years, BotV was his first novel.

Regardless, Vinge wrote novels in the '80s so he is disqualified.

Btw, Ramo: I really, really want to do that book. Perhaps if Rev. Space wins, my theme will be "Books written by Vernor Vinge that begins with 'Deepness' and ends with 'Sky.' "

Hmmm... misread the theme. Figured it was newly published novels, not novelists.

I've taken the liberty of posting a thread in the NationStates forum regarding nominating "Jennifer Government", the sci-fi book recently published by NationStates creator Max Barry.

That may be a good book for July as:

1) It satisfies the requirements of John's theme (never an easy task )
2) The book appears to involve many issues that will generate some discussion
3) The book has gotten fairly good reviews
4) Many NationStates spammers players have probably already read it and it may draw more people into the ASFDG

Amazon link for Jennifer Government

I would nominate it but I haven't read it. (But don't take this as criticism of the "you have to read it to nominate it" rule, as I happen to agree with that.)

I nominate The Stone Canal by Ken McLeod. It's a novel about a working libertarian society It was rather enjoyable.

I hated that book!

The thing which annoyed me most was that I read it on the bookshops recommendation that if you like Ian Banks you will like Ken McLeod.

Suffering from ads?

Then I renominate How Few Remain by Harry Turtledove.

(From Amazon.com)
In 1862, the Confederacy won the War of the Rebellion (not by interference of time travelers, as in Turtledove's Guns of the South, LJ 9/1/92, but by their own skillful military and diplomatic efforts). The defeated North has stewed for nearly 20 years. In this alternate history, the South exercises an opportunity to purchase Sonora and Chihuahua from the bankrupt Mexican Empire, having already wrested Cuba from Spain. James G. Blaine, now president of the United States, arrogantly seizes upon this pretext and invades with the aim of reunification. Lincoln has become an outcast of the Republican Party and preaches socialism while Custer is a frustrated and embittered colonel on the frontier, Samuel Clemens a fiery newspaper editor in San Francisco, and Rosecrans the inadequate head of the Union Army. Turtledove is an accomplished professional at this sort of thing and has given us an entertainment that makes us think somewhat about why we are the way we are.

If you like alternate history stuff, have you read Ward Moore's "Bring the Jubilee", originally published in the 50s? Another good alternate Civil War story.

Got spare money?

Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson, the final book in his trilogy, and I think the best. I just finished reading it yesterday.

Last bump before voting thread.

So far we have:

Revelation Space, Aleister Reynolds, nominated by Rogan Josh.
How Few Remain, Harry Turtledove, nominated by Lonestar.
Diaspora, Greg Egan, nominated by St. Leo.
Starfish, Peter Watts, nominated by Jon Miller.
Slaughtermatic, Steve Aylett, nominated by Static Universe.
Perdido Street Station, China Mieville, nominated by Stefu.

Odin, as I said when I PM'ed you, I can't accept Blue Mars as it will require us to read three books to fully understand it.

Lonestar, we don't joke about nominating the Dune prequels in this club - some things are just not funny!
