A medium house in Napa, Calif., goes for around $500.000.
I have a 4 beds, 2 baths, 1291 sq. ft. 35 years old and it would sell somewhere between 400. to 500.000. Some new homes were builded four blocks away 1 1/2 years ago and when for 500. then and today are 600 to 700.000.

Median value of a house in Napa County: $251,000. Maybe you oughtta move next door to Lake County, where the median house price is just $120,000+-

Costs at least 200K for a decent house where I live in Maine due to it being all touristy and such which is really tough since all the year-round residents are pretty poor (except the lobstermen who rake it in) due to so many jobs being seasonal...

Maine generally is

Hancock county (my bit of the country's year round residents are pretty average in income but our housing prices are much higher)
97.6% white (wow)

we even in my country at large we're poorer and our houses cost more

Oh, I think you're way off. A townhouse in Manhattan isn't going for less than $2 million, I bet. Large, nice apartments can be bought for upwards of $1 million.

Queens and Brooklyn are cheaper, depending on the location. Brooklyn Heights is practically as expensive as Manhattan, as are the nicer parts of Astoria.

Once you get way east, it gets much better.

The cheapest kind of house here is what is known as a "country house." Three stories high, small yard, 4 bathrooms, kictchen, living room, family room, 3 bedrooms (one master), dining room, a total area of around 210 sq. m (2100 sq. ft.), hm, say US$50K. Across the border, you can buy one that's about 1/5 the price, that are bigger, better built, and fancier decorations, with a large common area (including swimming pools).

The mose expensive house in town, called "Sky High," went for US 50m last time I checked.

These are small. Actually one proably would be just a toilet (no bathtub or showers). There are lots of rooms but only 210 sq. m. You can figure out how big they are.

Dining room: where you have meals

Family room: similiar to a living room, but where your family hangs out exclusively, and is usually smaller than a living room. Friends and relatives hang out with family in the living room.

I could understand where the confusion came from. Many houses in Canada and the US don't have a family room. Kitchens are big so a few people can eat inside, without going out to the dining room.

I don't own a place here in Toronto, but if were to buy the place I'm renting (1 bedroom + den, recent reno, third floor walk up with decent sized deck, maybe 900sq ft total area) I'd figure it'd be about $250k. Houses in the neighbourhood start at about $350k for an attached that you'd be better tearing down (seriously, all the value is in the land).

I own a condo in Yaletown (very trendy area of downtown) in Vancouver. 600 sq. ft., no outside space, 1 bedroom + solarium. Bought it in 1998 for $145k, could probably sell it now for near $170k. The area I lived in before that in Vancouver, a small lot with a "handiman's special" (read: tear it down, start again)started at $500k.
