That's pretty typical of any older city in North America. Unless you want to be way out in the 'burbs in Toronto, or buy a new condo, good luck getting a house that was built much after WWII.

Not necessarily. It's much cheaper in some areas than others. Of course, West Vancouver is expensive, but Richmond is not bad. Burnaby is quite reasonable, and when you go out to Port Moody or something, it's pretty cheap.

It all depends where. I grew up in Port Moody, but on the north shore, near IOCO (don't know if you know where that is). Not too cheap there, but if you're in the heart of PoMo, yeah, it's much more reasonable. Of course, the same goes for all the other suburbs too.

actually, shaughnessy is more expensive than both of them...the BP's are way up there...

but then again, there are 4-12 million dollar houses in a few parts of the citieis

westvan is nice, but has bridge problems which will keep its land value below shaughnessy until they fix the lions gate bridge.....

My parents own a very large 3 bed detatched property in a pleasant suberb. The house has plenty of land around it, and is in the what is called the 'golden mile' - ie the nicest place to live in the town. It is however in one of the crappiest towns in the Country, and is therefore worth about £240-£250k.

Put an end to popups!

I live in Boulder, Colorado in a three bedroom / two bath house. It's not large, with about 1500 finished square feet of space. I have about 1/3 of an acre of property and have been slowly doing good things to the landscaping since I bought this place in '94. The house was built in 1904 and was moved by the previous owner from a flood plain to its current location. I bought it for $125,000, gutted it and rebuilt it. All told I put about $80,000 into the place bringing it up to code and replacing all the wiring, plumbing etc. Almost everything on the inside of the house was replaced.

Today it is worth $460,000 (at least that what it is assessed for). I paid off the mortgage last year, which is nice.

I only rent the house I'm in at the moment.

5 bedroom* terraced house including a loft conversion, bathroom with toilet, shower room with toilet, toilet, 1/4 acre garden 2 offroad parking spaces out front reasonably large kitchen. Gas central heating. 5 mins walk from town center.

Fairly poor state of repair, good enough for renting but if I bought it to live in I'd want to totally rework the plumbing and plastering downstairs and replace all the carpets etc. absolute minimum £10,000 of work to be done on it I'd say.

Just changed landlords and was sold for £250,000.

*It has 5 bedrooms for rental purposes but we use one of the bedrooms as a spare room/box room/weights room.

We rarely have houses here. We have appartments, land value is too high.

my parents' ~70 square meter 2 bedroom appartment in a working/lowermiddle class neighbourhood costs for arounnd 105k USD.

Depends where you live just like everywhere, but there are no cheap areas here. In the relatively cheap area (somewhere with no civilization) house would go $250k cheapest. And that can be a crappy house too. In better areas, helsinkin suburb area or so normal houses are from $300k ->. But that's still relatively cheap, still in normal areas the land only (not even big!) goes often for $200k and then you still have to build them damn house.
My parents have been living in house they have here for a long time, but now the land value is over $200k and with the house, the whole thing is $390k to recent estimation (last year), but prices have gone up since then. And no, this is not a mansion, just a normal house in normal area. It's sick. Just few days ago it was in news that even our ministers have loans to pay because of their houses. You have to include, that we make less money with higher income tax, so it's really very super expensive after that!

SO basically it means, that if you get a house, you'll have to go to bank and pay loans back for the rest of your natural life. It's normal procedure here. They get you like a prisoner. Makes me sick. With $25k a year I'll be making after degree, you can count how long it takes me to a get house after all other necessary expenses. Yes. Forever. I want to get out of heeeeeeeeereeeeeeee..
