Anyway, Elisabeth the second was the second elisabeth. Surely you're not claiming April second is the second month of april?

In Spanish it is First WW, Second WW, not WW2 or WW1

I liked the system I saw on Russian graves from the Second WW, where the month was a roman decimal. I think day went first too, so instead of 4.5.45 it would say 4.V.45

That's what we want the French to think. It's a big Anglo-alliance, also including Australia and Canada designed to strike at the French at the best possible moment.

Australia uses the European (sensible) order for dates.
dd-mm-yyyy

Although I do prefer yyyy-mm-dd as every other measurement has the largest unit first and so on, so why not the date too?

quote:
Except no one says, "12 January, 2003." We say "January 12, 2003."

Well, day-month-year sounds logical, and certain types of Americans definitely like the Euro-cache.

Except no one in Europe actually speaks this way. My German in-laws always say "April 3, 2003". In german as well as English. So isn't writing the other way pretentious?

Same here, both in France and Germany.

And Sloww :
your military writes dates exactly the same way the French people do (we need a nyahnyahnyah smiley ). In France, you don't talk about the Second April 2003, but about the Two April 2003 (first is the only exception, yet it is not represented in written dates).

Isn't it a bit silly that we have all these Europeans arguing English grammar with the Americans?

We all know that the Americans can't speak English properly, so why argue about it?

Nobody in Germany talks this way, and believe me, I know a lot of them. Your statement "Except no one in Europe speaks this way" is completely false. At the countrary, most of Europeans talk so.

Of course both the dutch and german speaking countries are somewhat of an exception when it comen to numbers anyway, I think we are the only ones who pronounce them in reverse.
87 --> seven-and-eighty instead of eighty-seven
Yeah , even I get sometimes confused by this now

I did, as it's easier for the computer to sort. For humans I prefer the date system used by the U.S. military, eg 6 JUN 1944. It's logical, concise and precise.
