Everyone:
It's become apparent that those who use the Macintosh computer platform will have to jump ship if they ever wish to fully experience Civilization III.
PC users have (or will have) Civ III itself, Civ III: Play the World, Civ III: Conquests and all the relevant patches.
Macintosh users have Civ III itself, a Mac-specific editor and some of the relevant patches (two of the three, I think). Everything else is up in the air right now, to put it politely.
Do the math. If you want to fully enjoy Civ III, the Macintosh platform is simply *not* the place to go.
I suppose Civ III and its follow-ups will never come to a gaming console, either. That's kind of too bad, as PS1 did have Civ II come out for the console some years back. (And the SNES had Civ I.)
Shucks. It looks like I'm going to have to head out to the bookstore and buy one of those "PCs for Dummies" and "XP for Dummies" books. I doubt it's that much of a difference, but if I'm going to have a home PC system, I want to know the ins and outs of it ... just like I do my beloved (but aging) Macintosh.

Do what yourself? Who doesn't get what? If you're going to start throwing around insults, can you please try and make your targets clear? I can't tell if you're insulting me because I'm not "doing it myself" or not.

Anyway, download the Mac 1.29 beta 2 patch. The general feedback seems to be that it's ready for prime time. You can get it here: http://www.macmame.org/Civ3_129_b2.sit |
**shuffles feet** Yeah, well, it's hard for me remain upset for terribly long when it comes to 98 percent of things, and the status of Civ III PtW, et al., falls into that category.
The reasons I'm so "gung-ho" on PtW is that it contains the rest of the civilizations that were indigenous to Civ II (Spain, Vikings, Celts, et al.) and is supposed to have a few neat other things (although I understand that any MPGing would be limited to other Macintosh owners due to the code used in the PC version0.
I'll take a look at the 1.29 patch. If it is ready for prime time, that should give patch parity with the PC version of Civ III, right?

Sure thing. You said that "they don't get it." Who is "they"? Am I a part of "they"? I don't know - I could be, but I do believe that I "get it".
I also know that if a Mac PTW port comes, I'll probably be the person working on it. Does your comment about talking to the Firaxis guys imply that I'm somehow preventing this? Or that if you asked them directly, through some miracle a Mac PTW port would burst forth simply because you wanted it to?
I'm not sure what rationale you have behind your arguments, other than you and a few dozen other Mac fanatics have voiced (of which I also consider myself) - quite firmly and forcefully - that you want a Mac port of PTW. That alone does not mean that it's a sound idea or that it should necessarily spring forth, borne from the wings of desire.
As Mac users, we have to face the reality that not every program that is important to us will make it to the MacOS. I'm not sure who you feel isn't understanding the situation, but all the players that I know would be involved with Mac PTW are both Mac-friendly and aware of the economic realities. Berating them for some perceived lack of understanding is, IMHO, not going to help one whit.

hi ,
, this is one misunderstanding , dont take it personal
"they" > the whole gaming industry , the people who make the rules , who tell you what project to work on etc , .....
they still dont get it , why wait and loose money ( they can make a lot ) by waiting months or a year before a pc game comes out in apple , ..... waiting to see , while loosing money , by the time the game comes out most people have moved to something else , ...... no-one drives around in an old car the bought for the prize of a new one , ......
you as a person are not preventing anything , you have not even started on it ( correct ? )
what they should do is a promotion stunt , and at the same time make loads of money , the release at the same time or within very short time frame of one and an other both the PC and apple version
about talking to Firaxis , well trying to sell them that idea , the fact that instead of listening to all those high payed hotshots who look at the stock exchange rather then making money , well those hotshots should for ones instead of being to ( read over ) carefull innovate something new , the PR and the sales would go sky high
"do it ourselfs" , well the people who make the game , instead of all the red tape license ( you know what i mean ) , ..... people like you , but they should start way more earlier instead of way to late ( not your fault )
loads of things are born on the wings of desire , civ itself , .... SID would have never ever though what he created would change the world
economic realities , well mass production meets mass consumption , ..... in the waiting and waiting money and customers are being lost , ......
keeping a windows up and running only for PTW its a sad thing , it really is the only thing that that old pc is active actually , .... but not everyone is that fortunate , many people who own a mac at home have bought the PTW (pc) to play at work , ......
hope this explains a bit , and ones again , nothing is personal at you
btw , it aint going to be an easy job for you , .... with all the new "cats ( mac os ) , ..... but it could not have been in better hands
have a nice day

The Sims add-ons have the distinction of selling more units for just the expansion than most Mac games themselves.

They did exactly this for Civ3's initial release. All the TV and print ads mentioned the Mac version from the start, and the Mac release was, IIRC, 2 months behind the PC release as we had started development when the PC version was being worked on.
Of course, the downside to doing simultaneous development on the Mac product is that it costs more money, since the development time is longer. It's really only practical when you know that the game is going to sell a ton of units. You certainly wouldn't want to do that on a title that wouldn't move very many copies. About the only way out of that dilemma is to have a Mac programmer on-staff instead of contracting out the work, but Mac programmers are hard to find.

Why tell Firaxis? They have no involvement in that. From my conversations with them, they're quite excited to have Mac versions of every single one of their titles. But as I've said before, wanting something to happen does not mean that it is always feasible.

hi ,
but not in the shops , .... what i mean is that the boxes have to be in the shop , next to each other , .....
many overseas distributors complain about late deliveries and high prices , .....
i know a shop in Italy that had to wait 8 weeks for its delivery ( import / export ) inside the US
mac version is great but as long as a game is not there in the stores for both PC and mac platform or within short time frame like 2 to max 4 weeks , a lot of money is being lost , ......
yes Mac people are not so easy to find , .... do you need help
firaxis who ever holds the lic and rights ( last part )
have a nice day

Overseas publishing is a completely separate (and very complicated) issue.

I really don't know. A long time ago, I handed the Civ3 code off so it could be localized, but I don't know what languages that was for, or if any other Mac lanaguages shipped. In my experience, most Mac games are localized for French and German, and that's about it.
Since Civ3 stores the text outside of the app, you could probably localize it yourself for most of the languages. Just grab the appropriate foreign patches and replace the .txt files. You'll have to edit them some to match up with the Mac "Cmd-Q" and "RETURN" text labels, among other things. After you've done that, you'll still have the issue of English resources, but you can edit those with ResEdit or Resorcerer on the app itself.
