Hello ISDG faithful,
I'm announcing my official resignation from the post of Minister of the Interior. I enjoyed my term immensely, and count myself lucky to have had this opportunity (thanks for those who voted for me!). I really mean that last sentence.
As for my reasons, there are a few:
1. Nagging feeling of that the job could be done better
I've tried my best to test out our options in order to find the best course of action, so I'm not worried about that. What referring to here is the non-interest of our team in economic matters. The MoI is supposed to generate interest, understanding and discussion as to the economic affairs of the state. I've assumed a very different role, that of the scientist who wants to be left alone because he thinks he knows best. Consequently, no one but the MoW or Consuls dare comment on anything remotely MoI-ish (other than city placement). I hope the next MoI is more of a "for the people"-type of Minister.
2. Friction with other Ministers and team members
I understand that discussion, debate and argument are all part of a healthy democracy game. But frankly I can only take so much before I start thinking that this is not fun for me anymore. As a Minister, you do have a responsibility, which means you cannot just "lay low" (i.e. avoid 'Poly) for a while until you feel like coming back. And so recently I've felt that, because of the politics, the ISDG was more of a chore for me than a leisure activity. I've no interest in look at Civ3 like "work". I'll gladly debate and argue, but only if I feel something is being accomplished.
3. Problems with the way our team is being run
By this, I mean there is a lot of debate on our boards, but when it all comes down to it, it's basically the Ministers and (sometimes) the Consuls that make all the decisions. The Ministers are basically playing the turns, and since each has a different agenda, they're always at odds.
The Consuls have noted this problem, and have promised a change is in order. I'm looking forward to it. What we need is the Consuls leading the discussions, the Ministers advising the team and the Consuls on the best alternatives, and the Citizens discussing these alternatives and voting on their favored options. What we've had so far was nothing like this, and has affected my decision to resign.
4. Uncertainty concerning my RL situation
Of course, this is the big one. I've just graduated and am currently looking for a job, which means my summer (and future!) is wide open. I do have some plans that involve me not having access to a computer for many months. I would rather resign from the MoI position ahead of time and ensure the transition runs smoothly, than just disappear one day.
I still plan to take an active part in this game. For me, the difficulty of our position and the difficult diplomacy with people we do not know makes this game more interesting than the PTWDG (although both games are pretty darn cool). I'm still faithful to 'Poly, and I want to be part of this team when we finally prevail in the end (assuming the game does not crash before then...sigh).
Last but not least, my legacy: 2 Granaries. It's not much, but I'm proud of it anyway.

Dom, I'm really sorry to hear all of this. I understand the reasons why you feel you can't continue, but I'd like to comment on one:
quote: 1. Nagging feeling of that the job could be done better |
I have been following this game pretty much everyday. I admit that I'm one of those who has under-participated, but only because I felt that my opinion was already well-represented (mostly by you). I'm not saying that I agree 100% with all the internal decisions, but I know how your games develop, how you get from point A to point B, and how much time you have devoted to Civ3 in general. That being said, I know when to keep my mouth shut on an issue that I still haven't mastered. My inexperience with MP games have kept me quiet too, while it has given F-P a chance to showcase his.... aggression.
I'm sorry for my lack of input with the team, but, in light of your resignation, I will make sure that I at least get my opinions out there. You may even find that you don't have to post your opinion.
Thanks and good luck with the job.

Dominae,
first of all I would like to congratulate you not on a good job, on an EXCELLENT job which really has set us up for the future. IMO the game start is the single most important period of the game, it will dicate your potential, and it takes a good planner to see how little of that potential is wasted.
Being a granary-freak myself, I have agreed with your policies almost always, and have found your dedication to be an example to all. I am really sorry you are resigning as you are without a doubt one of the persons who has most contributed to this game. I hope that despite your resignation you continue to be active and offer the valuable insight which you have so far given.
As for the reasons you give,.
#1 is totally groundless Dom, and I think most of us agree.
#2 I guess affects people in different degrees. You have seem, I'm the class of person who looves to argue, but perhaps you are not of that type and would rather see the whole show running smoothly. That won't happen anywhere, and is what makes the "democracy" part of the game interesting. Remember the Advisor videos in Civ2? It was funny beacuse everyone offered contradicting advice which mostly served to fullfill their idea of what a great empire should be (especially the Elvis dude). Same in RL. Same here. In the end you win some and you lose some, and that, in my opinion, is the beauty of it.
#3 I agree in that I think we must start looking for new ways of running this team, not because I doubt anyone in particular but because everything in life can be improved. To think that one system or one idea is universally the best is very naive and foolish. If we feel the need to change it, we must, for the sake of the team as a whole.
#4. Yes, RL is a chore. If this is your major reason then I support your resignation wholeheartedly and wish you the best in your RL enterprises.
That is all I have to say, I think we should be starting to think of a city called Dominus in the near future....

From the constitution:
quote: The Senate has the power to take a proposal for Change of Command (CoC).
a. Any Senator may proclaim a Change of Command proposal on an elected official.
b. The Senator must state the elected official he is intending to remove from office in the first post - this is called the 'initial proposal'.
c. During 48 hours after the initial proposal, any number of candidates may apply for the job. The Senator himself may or may not apply.
d. After the first 48 hours, but within 72 hours, the Senator must organize a vote - this is called the 'replacement proposal'. If this vote is not organized within this time, the CoC is nulled.
e. The replacement proposal vote must be open for 72 hours.
f. The replacement proposal vote must include all candidates, plus the person who was the subject of the initial proposal, unless this person indicates otherwise.
g. The CoC vote shall be done with a preferential ballot. The person with the highest outcome wins the election.
h. An elected official may only propose a Change of Command vote on himself, and not on another one.
i. Any elected official may not be the subject of a CoC for five turns after his election. |
I'm going to start the 'initial proposal' thread now.
edit: sorry, I thought Dominae wouldn't be a senator, but he can start his own CoC vote if he wishes. I wouldn't like to be seen as forcing him out of office

Well... we're all entitled to our own opinions, Dom. Knowing a little of how much goes into analysing a game at even this complexity, I would be inclined to disagree with you - no-one could have done it better, especially not on their own as you have been managing to do.

During the whole time I have been astounded at your posts in response to criticism - you have always been level-headed, ready to listen just in case someone actually had a point (more often than not it just seemed to be mindless kvetching), and as responsivbe as possible. The perfect Minister.

Here's hope things DO change, so we can enjoy more team debate and a greater level of friendliness for those like you who actually do the work.

I totally understand this. I graduated myself last week and kinda took the coward's way out - more study instead of going into the REAL world (as Dad would tell me). I too will be taking a break from Apolyton and the game, to a degree. I expect to come back feeling invigorated and more prepared to enjoy, instead of seeing it as work. Many times you would post after some time away, and your style seemed to fit exactly the state of mind I am sometimes in - it's very difficult to log on when it seems like it's more trouble than the fun it is worth. Well I hope you come back and can help us with the new vision od the ISDG - that of more non-Executive participation.
When you DO come back (and you'd better! ), come back not as a Minister, but as a team member sans responsibilites - you will feel eager to debate plans and can take time off without fear. Hopefully this will result in us also benefiting from your knowledge and detailed scrutiny of our game.

You should be - think of how many citizens will come from those Granaries! Why, in a few thousand years' time everyone will be able to trace a link to you!
