I just finished a game in the demo, me (germans), vs 3 computers, no teams. I really wanted to see what the end game techs were like so I was advancnig through the ages quickly but the computers were right behind me. I was attacked on my western front and fought back well and even took two of their cities as as punsihment.
Another civ attacked from the east, mostly with bombers which I was not prepared for but I quickly slapped down some SAMs and a few anti air tanks and made short work of them. They soon sent some troops too but I was handling them ok.
At this point I had finished all techs and began researching AI. Just wait until my units start rolling out in an unending stream - I will rule the world !!!!
And then.... "A Nuclear launch has been detected"
What????
BOOOOOM !! - Nuke hits my capital and wipes out the library that was almost done researching AI !!!!!
Two hours of building and anxiously awaiting the end game tech and it's wiped out in an instant!
Now, I know the missle shield end game tech stops nukes but is that the ony way to stop them? There are no units or buildings that stop nukes?
Man I was so annoyed when that nuke hit!

A few questions:
Do you continue researching the tech if you have a second library or do you need to start over?
If not, do you get a refund because the end techs are very expensive. It would really be unfair if you didn't get refunded.
Does an extra library give you any other benefits apart from what's been mentioned in this thread?

well here comes the planning part:
send a few spies/special forces to your enemies turf, find where all the silos are.
launch some tomahawks to destroy them or send in a special forces guy to sabotage.
airstrike is also an option.
the stuff that i do when i get nukes is nuke the enemies capital straight away to disorganise him and disrupt his trade routes etc.

See that's why it was so annoying. Having a second library only lets you research different things at the same time. But If the library that was researching your very expensive and very long end game tech gets nuked you have to start all over, no refund.
I'd imagine the computer can build missle silos and missles faster then my spies can find them and then eliminate them. Once your opponent gets nukes you are toast. Especially if they put the silos deep within their territory since Nuke ICBMs have virtually unlimited range. They can wipe you out from clear across the map long before you could get an airport close enough to launch an air strike (which can be shot down by SAMs) or send in enough special ops teams to take out all the silos.
There should be some sort of upgrade to the SAM sites that gives a chance to shoot down an incomming nuke. Sort of like how the Patriot missles can shoot down incomming Scuds in Iraqi. Some sort of "Star Wars" defense system would be nice. Getting the end game missle sheild takes too long and by the time you complete it the other guy is already dropping the bomb on you and there is NO way to stop it.
What I really expected to see was some sort of negative consequence for using nukes. Like all other civs turn against you or it causes pollution or something that would be a deterant not to use them. Much like in Civ or in real life for that matter. As it is there is absolutly no reason not to nuke everyone as soon as you can.
And there is only one way to stop it which is the end game missle shield, but if they nuke one or two of your cities and/or hit the library that was researching the missle shield, good luck getting the resources or the time to complete it.
Basically this game will become a race for nukes since there is no reason not to use them.

This isn't accurate. If you are researching a tech and have two libraries, BOTH have to be destroyed to abort the research. The research isn't tied to a particular library. Also - you get a partial refund for the unresearched part of a tech if you are unable to complete the research.

nukes are not powerful enough to guarantee you a victory. There is the armaggeddon counter, ICBM missile shield, and even when the nuke lands its still minimal damage as long you spread your farms and other buildings.

I did, but you gotta admit that we are far faar (ina galaxy away) from the real & long lasting nuke effects: radiation. Its just an oversized bomb.

I'm sorry but I don't understand. Say I have two libraries, Lib A is researching a militray tech and Lib B is researching a commerce tech. Now, Lib A gets destroyed, does that mean both researches continue? If they are not tied to any particular library why is it that when I click on one library is shows a progress bar for the tech I selected there and when I click on another library it shows a different progress bar for the tech I selected there?
I don't understand what you are saying that the research is not tied to any particular library. Unless you are saying that multiple libraries can be working on the same tech at the same time in which case loosing one would not matter but I have not seen anyway to have more then one library research the same thing.
From what I have seen, and maybe I am remembering wrong, but when you have two libraries researching two different things and one of them gets destroyed that tech progress is lost, which would imply that the research was tied to that particular library.
As I said I could be remembering wrong or just not understanding right, please clarify for me - Thanks!

The number of libraries you have is the number of techs you can be researching at a given time, however no specific tech is tied to any specific library. As long as your number of libraries equals or exceeds the number of techs you are researching you're cool. Note that excess libs do not improve the speed of research. They just provide additional "bandwidth".

Does this apply to other research buildings as well or just libraries? If I'm researching a granary tech and I have two granaries but one gets destroyed, do I get to keep researching it or do I have to start over?

Ahh, see when I have had more then one library I usually try to have them each working on something. In the case where I started this post I actually had two libraries each researching two different end game techs, which is why I lost one. So what you're telling me is that we should have an extra library that is not doing any research, it just serves as a backup to take over for any library that gets destroyed?
But if all libraries are researching something and one gets destroyed a tech will be lost. In that case the tech is "tied" to a particular library because the tech research initiated at the destroyed library is the one that would be lost.
So they are tied to a particular library really but if you have a backup library it can take over where the other one left off.
I think I understand now, thanks!

Actually if you have TWO libs going and TWO techs being researched when you lose a lib, one tech will simply go idle (as if you had queued it up). I'm not sure but I'd bet it's the last one you started research on. In any case, the only way to lose progress on a research tech is to lose ALL your libs (and you still get a partial refund for the unresearched part). Same goes for "enhancer" buildings.

Unit upgrades also? Have two barracks, research an upgrade at one but have it get destroyed - does the other take over? In other words, does this system apply to all research?

Sounds like a design error to me the way Paul explained it.
Unless ofcourse it was intentional that you have to build multiple librarier to be on the safe side. They don't have any other effects on your cities I think, so that would be odd.
Basically, in order to be safe you need to build an additional library or two, weird stuff.

I'm not sure why losing all your libararies causes you to cease being able to research constitutes "weird stuff". If anything the fact that techs are hardlinked to libs makes things easier on the defender than many RTS games I've played.
