	Medical Opinion 101 Remove this text

Yuch

So I've been gargling mouthwash all day after finding this and am feeling a little woozy

My tongue is a nice healthy pink, but at the very base of it alllll the way back there's all this white stuff sitting around on it. Like it looks like a pile of little maggot space colonies at war with each other and the mouthwash isn't helping any!!! The stuff isn't on my tonsils, and my tonsils are relatively ok - although a little inflamed as usual

What's going on back there - I'M WORRIED! ... what do I do, or who do I see to fix this???

I just stuck a little sugar spoon back there and tried to scrape it all out - it's getting messy

Everything is very raspy and bumpy back there and there are a lot of nooks and crannies for the space colonies to hide from a silver spoon. Now I'm going to prep some warm salt water

The wooziness is caused by your mouthwash, which contains alcohol.

The white stuff is probably drainage from your sinuses. Unless you're running a fever--a sign of infection--it's probably no big things, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Or else, it might be a colony of invading brain-eating wormbeasties from the planet Trafalmador.

You can get a tongue scraper at the drugstore. It should be with the toothbrushes. You can also just use a toothbrush and just scrape the stuff forward.

Tongue scraper is made for cleaning your tongue.

What is "thrush"

I don't have HIV or cancer but maybe some sort of auto-immune defficiency or poor diet?

I suggest visiting your doctor for a proper diagnosis. If it is Thrush, it can be cleared up with the proper mdeication.

It's just bacteria, unless I'm badly mistaken - you can scrape it off with patience and an old toothbrush.

Actually, "shaving" your tongue will help - but it won't stop the bacteria from reforming (it will come back again - unless you like shaving your tongue...Eww!, Ouch!, and of course -

Once diagnosed, a simple pill will clear it up in a few weeks.

How does one contract Thrush? I don't have the foggiest idea. I myself have never had the "pleasure" of experiencing it, though my friends have...does anyone know how it's contracted? (sorry, I'm only familiar with its symptoms)

Thrush IIRC is a fungal infection, I had it and it was cleared up in a week or so after the doctor gave me some stuuf.

I belive natural youghart would work as well

I thought thrush was very rare / impossible, except in those with a compromised immune system.

Thrush is caused by a fungus. I dont know the rate of infection in 'normals' but it's very low. The ID physicians here deal with it a lot in association with HIV since it is much more common in the immunocompromised. In high risk patients its virtually a signpost of HIV infection. Thrush is also a common infection in people using inhaled corticosteroids for allergies. In any case go see your physician.

I got it when I was a student, everyone I knew thought I must have got as a result of nocturnal activities but the doc said you can just catch it generally.
