It would appear we're somewhat in luck gentlemen.

2 more pods found by our scouts, which can be popped next turn. Both are on....rocky. Our CP's have made it to their base sites safely, and will be planted next turn. The Pod to the north of University Base was popped and ended up cloning our scout patrol. Good thing too, simply because it looks like up there is where all the land is.

Observations:

Don't worry (yet) at the Believers and Angels lead in the Faction Dominance chart - it's only 'cos they have their three starting bases already established that they are so high - population counts a lot in the dominance calculation methodology (but I'm a little surprised it's Miriam and not Roze that's leading - they both have the same pop, and Roze has that second tech like most of the smax factions have

I'm no SMAC expert, is there anything special about pods on rocky terrain?

Inflate your Upload Space

Maybe they want two mineral-resources-on-rocks more...

BTW, why do you (and usually the AI in single-player) build your bases so close together? That way the bases eat up each other's resources... (enlighten the ignorant newbie)

Hey, I'm back! Could not be part of the debate this last weekend, but I noticed the turmoil following Tassadar's escape, when he left University Base disguising himself in the xenofungus.

Anyway, I think that we should stick to the plans as they were originally conceived.

One question: Why are we planting the northern base north and northeast of our first base, instead of two squares north? I'll bow to Archaic's judgement in placing it, but my understanding was that two squares north was the plan.

Beats me why the AI does it, since it never does it properly, but in our case, I suppose the short answer would be that it's simply that the bases don't really need that many squares later on into the game with all your boreholes and condensor/farm(/soil enricher) tiles, so it's better to get more pop to turn into more specialists

This was actually GT's idea, but anyway, planting the base there won't upset our terraforming paradigrm to any real extent, and it'll give the base an extra point of energy in the short run with that river tile, which is a rather dramatic boost in research and economy for the early game.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

So it does. But then I'd suppose most factions are celebrating their pops just now. And if we can put the minerals to good use, there are more prod-happy factions out there who would make killings having had our pop results.

No worries.

Now here's just hoping that the other factions don't all pop monoliths and beat us to the techs we need.

I hope the Hive didn't start with lots of fungus around. When I, uhm, run Hive simulations on my computers having fungus is a major cash cow for that faction. Their troops are free, after all, and easy to replace, while their planet pearl bonus proves significant given their lousy economy.

Hmmm... that would be an interesting trick to pull, but wouldn't that be somewhat counterbalanced by the necessity of using formers to clear a lot of space if they want to be able to grow?

Yeah, but the Hive has prod coming out their ears, after all, what with all the slave labour. Running a serious terraforming effort is simple for them. Their main liability is how cash-straped and reasarch deficient they are from scratch, and killing worms can go some way toward mitigating that.

If that glorified toilet paper they call Pravda actually tells the truth for once, then they not only got a patch of fungus but an actual fungal tower in there...

In which case they'll probably have more cash than us for quite some time.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Assuming that they can continue to defeat them in battle. Fungal Towers near bases don't tend to spawn worms overmuch, but they do spread the fungus.
