I was a part-time security guard back when I was an undergrad. It was the most mind-numbing awful experience of my life. Boredom does not begin to discribe the oozing tick of the clock when their is nothing to do. Nothing!!! Argggg!

Providing genuinely nothing happens, you don't need to be alert for anyone/anything happening to the thing you're guarding, you could always just train yourself to enter a state of complete mental nothingness.

Usually when I see guards they are either doing something, like talking to people, or reading a magazine, book, or newspaper. Zkribbler, were you prohibited from bringing reading material?

Guard duty was my least favorite part of being in the Army. Luckily, I got promoted quickly so I was soon telling other people to do guard duty.

I have a job as a security guard in the weekends...it is farking boring, but at least I get paid to do my school work then =)

Guard duty was fun. I can't imagine doing it for the rest of my life though. Only time I had some action was when we were training in the woods and night time Corolla accelerated there and it was full of teenagers drinking. They were badmouthing me OK, but I was the one with gun. I didn't naturally shoot anyone, but at the end of it, I was the one staying and they leaving .
It was a great night.

I have bad memories from guards too. In Spain this guy batoned me down when I came back to my room drunk. Apparently my buddies were having the radio turned to the max volume and people were complaining. They cut the electricity after several warnings. They had batteries, so the music continued pumping and old folks really getting pissed. So I come back and as I'm opening the door my my (our) room, this really pissed off looking guard comes and *BLAM!* straight to my head. It was really surprising because I didn't know what was going on. He then entered our room and was super pissed off, so we got the message alright.

So, needless to say I love Spain. I wish guards would do that to other punks as well. I was innocent, but I understood so it was all great. Morning after was horrible though, hang over and swell in my fore head. Nice one lads! Thank you! I took one for the team, I'm a team player after all.

DarthVeda, Nah, I think they knew I had only blanks. And they knew for sure I wouldn't shoot at them. But I did told them I'd give alarm and there would be 30 soldiers pissed off that I had to wake them up, and we'd seriously kick their butts after that. So *WROOM WROOM* the Corolla took off.
