Worked ok for me. (disregard my comment at Pantheon :P )
First step I'd try is doing a complete reinstall.

A patch fix is being put through it's paces and should be up very soon. The actual game exe goes through many, many hands before it's ready for a patch, and we as a global collective were unfortunately caught unprepared when the game hit the shelves early.
Sorry for all the trouble,
J

If you are using the no-cd crack, the patch wont take either.

Well I have the german version of RoN and also have installation trouble with the new patch. It downloads perfectly but it stops installing after 79% reporting "invalid patch file error" and "Retcode positive -32769"

Also, if you have successfully downloaded the patch but the patch has failed to install, please include the contents of the file patch.err. Thanks!

Graham that worked almost. I got the patching dialog, then at 98% complete, I got a Patch Error that says "Retcode Positive - 32769". I will try again from a fresh reinstall as I have tried patching several other ways before attempting this.
EDIT: It worked! I substituted "patch.rtp" with "RON1801_0902.RTP" in the command above. =)

Here's the contents of my patch.err
"ENTRY: data\rules.xml"
Could this be because I tried to reskin a unit?

I don't know why you would have changed rules.xml in order to reskin a unit but having changed rules.xml would cause the patch to fail.

If you don't include that very last parameter, nothing will happen. Try adding the "w" add the end of the command line.

I've tried the 'w', but it doesn't help. Maybe I'm still doing it wrong. I'm about to do a fresh install, I'm confident that it will do the trick. Thanks for your help gents! BTW, off topic, do you plan to update some of the unit skins in future patches? So far the results to make unique skins by modders have failed. Thanks again...
