The Punk Thread: How Punk Are You? Suffering from ads?

don't spit on me man, i'm not that punk -- NoFx

i really just started this threat to discuss all punk music, but mainly NoFx's new CD, War on Errorism.

i like two songs especially, while i believe most of the CD isn't all that good.

quote:
"Re-gaining Unconsciousness"

First they put away the dealers,
keep our kids safe and off the street.
Then they put away the prostitutes,
keep married men cloistered at home.
Then they shooed away the bums,
then they beat and bashed the queers,
turned away asylum-seekers,
fed us suspicions and fears.
We didnīt raise our voice,
we didnīt make a fuss.
Itīs funny there was no one left to notice
when they came for us.
Looks like witches are in season,
you better fly your flag and be aware
of anyone who might fit the description,
diversity is now our biggest fear.
Now with our conversations tapped
and our differences exposed,
how ya supposed to love your neighbor
with our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry ībout big brother,
now we got a big father and an even bigger muther.
And still you believe
this aristocracy gives a **** about you.
They put the mock in demockracy
and you swallowed every hook.
The sad truth is you would rather
follow the school into the net
cuz swimming alone at sea
is not the kind of freedom you actually want.
So go back to your crib and suck on a ***
go bask in the warmth of your diaper.
Youīre sitting in **** and piss
while sucking a huge pacifier,
a country of adult infants.
A legion of mental midgets
all regaining their unconsciousness

quote:
it's not the right time to be sober
now the idiots have taken over
spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?

Mensa membership exceeding
tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it's really elementary
the industrial revolution
has flipped the ***** on evolution
the benevolent and wise are being cornered, ostracized, what a bummer
the world keeps getting dumber
insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason

darwin's rollin over in his coffin
the fittest are surviving much less often
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule
and im startin to feel a lot like charlton heston
stranded on a primate planet
apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
with generals and the armies that obeyed them
followers following fables
philosophies that enable them to rule without regard

there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
political scientists think the same one vote that some monkeys are inbred
majority rule, don't work in mental institutions
sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions

what are we left with?
a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland
pass on traditions
how to get ahead religions
And prosperity be a symbol to culture

the idiots are takin over

timely and true

so, feel free to discuss punk music, recommend me soem good bands, present lyrics, or tell stories from times you've seen punk bands

rawk on.

Never much cared for NOFX.

some interesting punk bands you might not have heard of:

2-pump Louie: Few punk female vocals that don't sound grating and shrill.

Against All Authority: Pretty hard-edged political ska. Good stuff.

Agent 51: Rancid rip-off, but good anyway.

Agent Orange: Interesting early-80 surfer punk.

Avail: Decent vaguely Pennywiseish melodicore...

Big D and the Kid's Table: Good ska.

Buzzcocks: One of the first english punk bands, pretty soft (like The Clash) definately worth at least DLing some of.

Choking Victim: Interesting sound, its really rare to get music that's as far away from pop punk as them while still be as catchy as 500 Channels or Crack Rock Steady.

Death By Stereo: One of my favorite hardcore bands, interesting vocals (whose lyrics you can actually make out!)...

Flogging Molly: Closest thing we've got to The Pogues now...

From Autumn to Ashes: On the hardcore end of the emocore spectrum. Take a look at Short Stories With Tragic Endings, the male/female duet is damn good.

Grade: Damn good metalcore.

Kill the Man Who Questions: How can you not love a band with song titles like "Bad Cop, No Donut?" Another hardcore with male female duets (although the female screaming instead of singing this time).

Le Tigre: People from Bikini Kill. Bizarrely disco-y, yet strangely captivating...

No Fun At All: Little too pop for my tastes but another example of good Swedish punk.

NoMeansNo: Wierd style... Worth a look.

Rise Against: Some of the better new melodicore.

Sick Of It All: Best hardcore.

Son Of Sam: More listenable Misfit-wannabes.

Stiff Little Fingers: At least "Each Dollar A Bullet" comes in second to "Sunday Bloody Sunday" for best song song about the mess in Northern Ireland.

Straight Faced: Probably the only hardcore band whose lyrics get stuck in my head. Good stuff.

Strike Anywhere: Love these guys. Would categorize them as emocore sort of I guess, fairly melodic though.

The Damned: Smash it up!

The Rise: Kind of a less creative and even more technoy Refused.

Thought Riot: Another great new band. Nice hard-edged political punk with a great fast beat.

Thrice: One of the best bands around now in any genra. Absolutely beautiful emocore.

Thursday: On the emo end of emocore. "Understanding a Car Crash" is great.

Tsunami Bomb: "Enemey Inside of Me" by them is my favorite bit of female vocal punk.

Zero Down: Best punk band with only one CD ever (lead singer is dead ). Great stuff.

The war on errorism is a great album! The best thing about punk is this ability to rock and be political at the same time. Nice quote from "I heard they suck live"...
If you want great political punk-rock you have to listen to Bad Religion. That's the **** right there. These guys can rock your socks off!

Put an end to popups!

Yeah Bad Religion is great stuff, them and the Dead Kennedys got me into punk in the first place. Tend to prefer stuff that's a bit harder now though...

"Gotta die, gotta die, gotta die for the government, die for your country - that's ****!"

Sometimes I get the desire to drive through a town or suburb - right by flag waving morons - blaring Anti-flag.

Hey! If you really support the troops, sign up for a tour of duty.

I heard she's dating Clint Baker from the Riddlin' Kids.

Oh yeah, don't forget Canada's best - Propagandhi. They were political back before the US went nuts.
