The dumb laws site is great. There are two that immediately stick out in my mind, but it's been awhile since I've visited the site so I don't remember where these dumb laws actually exist.

There is a city in which it is illegal to fart, on thursdays, after six pm.

And there is a city in which the detonation of a nuclear device brings about a $500 fine.

Oh, and I break Maryland state law two or three times a week. stupid puritans...

About that shooting, I remember it had some other rules too, like it supposed to happen at certain hours and at certain distance. I'm not sure though.

I remember that my father and I were making fun of the local regulations on waste water during a carnival show.

It is forbidden to:
- dispose of water hotter than 35°C,
- dispose of water with pH < 6 and pH > 8 or so,
- dispose of water containing oils,
- dispose of water mixed with faeces,
- dispose of water containing peptides,
- dispose of water containing detergents,
and a lot more. The only legal way to use it is to open your cold water tap and let it run.

... or to wash dishes. (btw. this just was the thing we were joking about. I was going to take a shower and to go to the toilet first. In the end I said that makes me vomit (usual familiar expression in Germany) and the answer was: "anywhere where you like except into the toilet".

Haven't heard anything of being forbidden in France. I was talking about Rottenburg near Tübingen near Stuttgart in Germany. I think the makers of these regulations never thought about what they are doing in their life.

The point wasn't about the "value" of culture, it was that many good french groups wouldn't even exist now if this law hadn't been voted.
So, protectionism has advantages sometimes
