I was just curious if anyone could postulate why there was an absence of an American side, and further, now that I think about it, why USA or NASA would have been absent (seemingly scrubbed) from the space shuttle in the intro....
Further, what criteria was used for the historical events at the bottom of the manual....they seemed like strange choices for "world events".
I could think of several things that might occlude the rather insiginificant evenst that were included...
Not that it matters a great deal...the game seems pretty fun.
I am just curious.

usa has a 200 year history...
most countries in the game have a 1000+ year history.
i would propose making an american nation, made up of indians at first and have very low tech stuff and then turn into the modern day america somehow...

That wouldn't make much sense, as modern American civilization is an offshoot of Europe, and is not a continuation of Native American culture in the slightest (although we did pilfer some Amerind legal ideas). We conquered and pushed aside the Native Americans, they didn't evolve into us. It should be treated as a separate culture.
It is interesting that the Americans aren't in the game, though. Most civ games have them, as American impact on modern civilization is so pervasive. Since the game does go into the modern era, I'd think they'd want to include us Yanks!
But, if they are going more by ethnicity of civs rather than nationality, I suppose that makes a difference, although one then has to account for the large number of European civilizations.

The Maya, Inca, Mongols, etc did not last long, they came and went quickly but long ago. I was tickled by the hypothetical modern units for these civilisations. Rome, Greece, etc I understand....longer lived both in power and influnce. Whatever, its all good fun.

The Maya, Incas, and Aztecs all lasted longer than ancient Rome and ancient Greece, even if they were less advanced.

Yeah, no farms, ranches! All the vills, guys and gals, are always wearing Texas style white hats and boots, but the gal vills are always dressed as Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders! As a special bonus, the Texas vills are anachronistically armed with six guns from the Ancient Age on, and know how to use 'em; the Texan trebutchets don't fling boring old rocks, they fling dead cows that cause twice as much damage! No grannary, instead a brewery for Lone Star Long Necks! Idle vills don't just loll about on the grass, they are seen to be sipping from tiny brown long necked bottles. If there are more than 10 idle vills you will find them over under the trees holding a chili cookoff. We replace the spies with saloon gals. You only get to build one brewery, in the rest of the cities you build saloons instead. Caravans are stage coaches that turn into pickup trucks at the dawn of the modern age. Replace them nasty heathen temples with Southern Baptist Churches that do taxation as per usual, but also give you a 10% tithing bonus! Oh god, yes! Your special unit is Texas Rangers! The fortresses look like The Alamo. Special bonus on helicopters which are 50% cheaper. Oil wells and refineries can stay the same because they already look the part. Semi classical versions of The Yellow Rose of Texas and other great Texanese songs play in the background. When your forces go into battle you hear "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You!" (... what are you asking? ... the default Texan leaders name? ... Governor Bush, of course!)

Texans would own. I bet we could come up with some great UUs for them.
My thoughts are much like the original poster's, I think that its PC BS that the USA isnt in the game.
The game takes PLENTY of liberties with history already, so saying the US wasnt around 4000 years ago is a cop out. Most of the civs in the game were not either.

I dunno, in Civ running into "Washington D.C., founded 2000 BC" always broke 'the illusion of history' for me.
That said, USA is defintiely needed for scenarios, etc. so I wouldn't mind it being in the expansion pack.

Yeah, in Civ III I sort of feel the same way, but then again what is Joan of Arc doing back in 2,000 BC with the French who as a nation arose after the fall of Rome, before that being Gaul and the Merovingians, and I have no idea who was living in that geographical area circa 2,000 BC now that I think about it. The French are as out of place temporally as Americans.
The Sumerians, on the other hand, were already an ancient culture by the time Civ III kicks off and they will be in the X-Pack coming this fall for Civ III. The Sumerians, surely, ought to be in RON also.
