OK, I know about using gamespy, but I've logged into gamespy, then tried (1) started the game without going through gamespy - doesn't work; (2) started single and multiplayer games using gamespy, but still doesn't work. I'm definitely on a lower version number than the patch.
What else do I need to do?

You have to go into GameSpy from within the game, not from the GameSpy arcade application installed along with the game. From the RoN main menu, go into Multiplayer, then GameSpy Internet Matchmaking. It should prompt you to download the patch if you haven't already. I forget if you have to log in to GameSpy first or not.
