I was just thinking how the Civilization series could be re-vamped with a new idea, for instance like in the Call to Power games where you could go many years into the future. One idea that came to me was:

"Civilization - Gritty Reality".

This game would focus on tearing away the optimisim of the other Civilization games. For instance:

People would not become suddenly happy with the creation of temples, theatres, Cathederals etc. One advance would be "Alcohol", and in early days, you could build small ale houses that served home brew and wines, in the industrial era this would make way for the Public House, and in the modern era, the club would be born. A wonder of the world would be the birth of the alcopop (huge commercial boom - 100% extra money to tresury in all cities).

Nationalism would create total distrsust for other nations, and all agreements apart from military pacts would be wiped out of the diplomacy screen. A wonder of the world would be the UN, but only because hostilities would be halted for a very short time as no country can work out how they managed to come to any sort of agreement.

Population booms would not occur with aquaducts, hospitals etc, but with the invention of eroticism, and to a certain extent, prolongued war ("the baby boom"). A wonder of the world would be the birth of Ron Jeremy.

Although this game would not paint a very positive picture of our species, I'm sure many people with either a jaded view of humanity or a dry sense of humour would enjoy it, and it might open up a whole new audience!

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

The Strangers :
While I'm all for Civ to represent reality even in its most evil aspects (slavery, genocides, dictatorships etc.) I don't think building whore houses should be included in the game simply because it is unsignificant. We have already wine, ivory, and soon tobacco in Civ3 which represent how vices make people happy. We have stadiums (colosseums) doing this effect too. And we may imagine TV stations and the Internet doing it too (easier access to mindless entertainment and porn).

Besides, I don't think erotism has anything to do with birth rates. A more complex model for birth rates could be welcome, which takes population's happiness and manpower needs into account as well as current components, but wanting to implement moral decay or righteousness is simply useless IMHO.

This is not a serious idea for a game! It's just a bit of a joke, a game of civilization based on the worst parts of humanity.

As for how eroticism is linked to birth rate - I'm not going to spell it all out. And as you say you like to see some reality in games, seeing the apathetic side of us might be refreshing. Moral decay is here, and the motivation behind a great many people - so why should the citizens in a civ game be any different?

As for housing, I don't consider it unsignificant. Part of the C20th century in Britain was the beginning of the council accommodation system, and if we didn't have it there would be total disorder.
