I've been playing on a 56k (aol no less!) without a hitch. Most games in the US are 200-300 ping, and the games play perfectly. I've played 1v1, 2v2, and 6 man FFA with little to no lag. And I hosted a 3 man ffa with no problems.

My DSL service was out for a couple of days, and I hosted several games on 56K dialup. I don't think anyone knew the difference.
