It's your Capitol: Let's talk about builds... Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Well, we have finally reached a point where Pamplona is not only free to build city improvements but also very much needed to do so. To say that the situation is dire might be an overstatement, but a looked at the demographics speaks of a disparity between ourselves and the leaders in many key areas.

Though I would prefer to be impartial on the matter, I am not. I have narrowed down the list of improvements to the relatively obvious ones: granary, marketplace, barracks, or library. To go even further, I will say that I have tentatively selected Granary as my choice for the city and. It is not, in my estimates, an improvement that should be done without by even the best high-growth cities and the sooner the better. I have not been made of aware of a situation so dire that we cannot delay other improvements for the 8 turns it would take to build this.

I have summarized my opinion here, but for the interested parties, I went into more detail concerning my 4 top choices in the "Running the Kingdom" thread. [edit]I can't provide a link to it for some reason.[/edit]

But... this thread was created in order to hear your opinions concerning those choices. If there is something out there not in the top 4 that you think should be considered for next, please say so. If you have a certain order in mind for those 4 improvements (taking into account that settlers, workers, etc. might be thrown in the mix later), please state what they are. If you only want to post your choice for the next build, go right ahead.

... and thanks in advance for any comments

I say either two worker's then a settler or vice versa, then build the Granery, MarketPlace, Library, and Barracks.

The granery will allow it to catch back up in size fairly quickly after building thise units.

I would like to see that we would either build a marketplace or a library first.

Arguments for the marketplace:

  1. A marketplace will increase our taxincome, which allows us to be better able to rush buildings and very important, buy technology.
  2. While we are builiding we are receiving taxincome. If we build a marketplace first, we will receive more taxincome while we are building other projects than if we wouldn't build a marketplace first.
  3. A marketplace generates hapiness.

Arguments for a library:
  1. We cannot keep on buying technology from our opponents. Sooner or later we have to reseach it on our own in order to:

  1. keep up with other nations in technology. If we stay with buying techs, sooner or later we will become a backward civ.
  2. become an advanced civilization. It is our challenge to become more advanced than other nations so that we are able to conquer them in time.

  1. Like the marketplace causes a higher taxincome, the library causes a larger reseachcount. When we build a library first, we have a higher reseachcount than if we build other projects first. This will cause thwt we win some extra reseach in comparison to the situation in which we build the library later.

Señor Aidun, having a city at size 12 without a marketplace (or library) is not comparable to having a city at size 6 with one; it is better. A marketplace or library add only 50% increases to the treasury or research, respectively, where a size 12 city in a beneficial location would have doubled its commerce by doubling its WFs.

If a size 6 city produced 8 commerce a turn (w/ no corruption for clarity's sake) and was putting everything in the treasury as we are, a marketplace would only make that 12. Whereas, the size 12 city without a marketplace is probably producing about double that from its WFs or 16.

Obviously, this is something of an oversimplification. The city will continue to grow no matter which improvement is built next, but the granary will cut the time it will take to get to higher pop. levels in half. The question is: how fast do we want to get there? That would be 8 turns well spent, IMHO, and what would come next after we set the groundwork for that unprecedented growth would probably still end up being a marketplace.

The only thing I would worry about is having our tile improvements around the capital match pace with growth, but then there is always the option to build a worker or settler if the city is growing too fast.

Just something to think about. I don't know if there is a right or wrong to say: granary then marketplace or vice versa. I would prefer to do it first, however, because I can time it to become effective right as the city hits size 7 as opposed to building it later and possible having to wait out a pop. growth for it to be useful.
