All I can say is I was previously a pure TBS person myself - Civ, Col, Civ2, SMAC, Civ3. I had tried Age of Kings, and I was always intrigued by the depth of its military model, but I coud never get into it because of the raw speed required to play the game. However I am absolutely loving RoN. There is no doubt that it is an RTS game, but the considerable effort by BHG towards reducing micromanagement allows you to focus much more on the strategic picture. Plus the game speed can be slowed down (there are 4 speed settigs). And in single player, you can pause whenever you want and still issue orders to all your units and buildings. I paused constantly at first, but I now that I've learned the game I never need to pause anymore.
And once you get familiar with the mechanics of the game and get past the need to pause, playing online multiplayer is great. There is nothing in single player TBS that compares to playing in realtime against other humans. In fact I never play single player anymore, only multiplayer.

Get the demo, youve got nothing to lose. Its very generous and you can get a good taste of the game to see if its for you.

BeBro, in the single player mode you can pause whenever you want to issue orders, so if you like the RTS idea but don't like the speed, you will probably like this game. You can either turn the speed setting to slow (or very slow) or just pause the game often.

Hey BeBro, if you happen to have a Microsoft mouse with a scrolling wheel that also has a click switch for the wheel, you can use the hotkeys menu in the game options to set the "wheel click" to be the Pause key. (I think this works with the demo.) Voila! TBS for all practical purposes, with you setting the duration of the turn.
Unlike most RTS games, RON lets you do lots of things while paused. You can move around the map, go to the market and maybe order up another caravan and a couple of merchants, visit your barracks and other military buildings and place orders, go to the library and research advances, select workers and give them building tasks, or harvest tasks, whatever. You can also slow the game down to slower or slowest during critical moments.
